One of the most common criticisms of Bitcoin centers on claims that it isn't "sustainable" because it (currently) relies (primarily) on a block subsidy to reward miners. As the block subsidy decreases to zero over time, those critics argue that transaction fees won't be enough to compensate miners and secure the network.

However, I believe that criticism is misguided. Bitcoin doesn't need to be used on its base-layer blockchain for everyday transactions in order to be successful. In fact, I believe that Bitcoin mining in the future may generate most fees from large-scale, high-value transactions, such as international payments and settlements between financial institutions.

For example, let's say that a bank in the United States wants to send money to a bank in Europe. Currently, that type of transfer would involve a number of intermediaries, each of which would charge a fee. The total cost of the transaction would be significant, especially for large amounts of money.

With Bitcoin, however, the transaction could be completed directly between the two banks. There would be no need for intermediaries, which would significantly reduce the cost of the transaction.

In addition, Bitcoin is a much more secure way to transfer money than traditional methods. Transactions on the Bitcoin network are irreversible and can't be tampered with. That makes Bitcoin ideal for high-value transactions where security is of paramount importance.

As Bitcoin becomes more widely adopted, I believe that it will increasingly be used for large-scale, high-value transactions. That very well could generate significant transaction fees that will more than compensate miners for their work and secure the network.
