Decentralization is a term that gets used loosely in the "crypto" space. However, true decentralization is actually rare: Bitcoin is one of the few truly decentralized networks, while other projects, such as Arbitrum, are completely centralized.
Arbitrum is a layer-2 solution for Ethereum that's (supposedly) designed to improve scalability and reduce transaction fees. However, the Arbitrum DAO, which is supposed to govern the project, is not truly decentralized.
The DAO's governance token, $ARB, is being airdropped to Arbitrum's founders, employees, and investors, while only a small percentage of tokens will be airdropped to everyday users. Additionally, more than 40% of the tokens in the DAO Treasury are controlled by the Arbitrum Foundation, which is controlled by the company that created Arbitrum.
This level of centralization gives the Arbitrum Foundation and its investors a great deal of control over the project. They can decide how the DAO is run, how the treasury is spent, and what changes are made to the protocol. In case it isn't clear, that is not true decentralization.
In contrast, Bitcoin is a truly decentralized network. There is no central authority that controls Bitcoin. Instead, the network is governed by the users, who vote on changes to the protocol. This helps ensure that Bitcoin remains censorship-resistant and that no one can control it.
If you're looking for true decentralization, then Bitcoin is the only option.
