One of the true innovations of Bitcoin and its blockchain is that it solved a problem that permeated digital spaces like the internet for decades: proving ownership of digital assets like pictures, articles, money and more. In a nutshell, the ability to easily copy and paste digital content has made it nearly impossible to identify the original, which means it's also nearly impossible to identify the true owner of the original.
This is an even more damaging problem in the context of digital money, where it has another name: a "Double Spend". Digital money before Bitcoin could easily be spent multiple times since it was impossible to distinguish copies from the original. And any money that can be infinitely copied is doomed to fail (which doesn't bode well for fiat currencies). In order to maintain some semblance of digitally-spendable money, we've been stuck with a mix of government- and institution-based financial networks to limit double spends. Unfortunately, those networks also subject users to immense oversight and overreach by those same intermediaries.
Bitcoin provides the solution. Ownership of data on the Bitcoin blockchain is tracked throughout time thanks to the continuous chain of transactions maintained by nodes and miners on the network. And no centralized intermediaries are needed since anyone at all can join the blockchain and since the full record of transactions is available to all participants. For the first time in history, humanity has a digital money that can't be tampered with or controlled. We as a society are just starting to understand the massive positive impact being driven by Bitcoin and related technologies.
