"thanks for reading to the end"
Jacques Anquetil was undoubtedly one of the greatest cycling champions of all time. Born on January 8, 1934 in Mont-Saint-Aignan, France, Anquetil was the first cyclist to win five Tours de France, an achievement that was not equaled until Bernard Hinault won his fifth Tour in 1979.
Anquetil was known for both his extraordinary mental strength and determination, as well as his incredible skill as a time trialist. He was also famous for his elegant style and distinguished appearance, which was the inspiration for his nickname "Maitre Jacques."
Anquetil's career began promisingly when, at the age of 21, he won his first Tour de France in 1957. From then on, he went on to win numerous races, including the Giro d'Italia in 1960 and the World Road Cycling Championship in 1961. Anquetil was also the first cyclist to win the three Grand Tours - Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España - in the same season, accomplishing this feat in 1964.
Also in 1964 he made history by becoming the first cyclist to win the Tour de France twice in a row. He then won again in 1966, 1968 and 1969, becoming the first to win five Tours de France.
In addition to his cycling exploits, Anquetil was also known for his eccentric and controversial private life. He was often the focus of media attention for his lavish lifestyle and his relationship with the famous French singer Françoise Hardy.
Although he was often criticized for his swagger and disregard for rules, Anquetil remained one of the greatest cycling champions of all time. His determination and mental strength inspired many other cyclists to follow in his footsteps and helped make cycling one of the most popular sports in the world.

Anquetil had an extraordinary cycling career, but what made him truly unique was his approach to cycling. Anquetil was a man of great discipline and determination, and this was reflected in his life both on and off the bike.
He was known for his meticulous preparation for races, which included rigorous training and a very careful diet.
Anquetil also had a great ability to calculate his effort during races, a strategy that allowed him to conserve energy for decisive moments. He was also a skilled climber, despite not being particularly light. His ability to administer his strength was across the board, preferring to assiduous effort, a judicious choice of races that allowed him to be able to enjoy life as well, without having to undergo the restrictions that characterized the existence of the athletes of his era.
During his career, Anquetil had numerous rivals, but perhaps the best known was Belgian Eddy Merckx, with whom he had a long and intense rivalry. Although the two men were very different, both personally and as cyclists, they shared a mutual respect and often worked together to achieve important results.
After his retirement from professional cycling, Anquetil continued to be involved in the sport as a television commentator and as a consultant to teams and athletes. He died on November 18, 1987, of pancreatic cancer. Not even cancer could erase the mark left by Maître Jacques on the history of cycling and the customs of his era.
His career and legacy in cycling have been remembered and celebrated on several occasions, including the 2014 Tour de France, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of his first victory.
