Genesis 36:31-39

Last couple posts were all about who was born to whom. This week, we have a record of the kings who reigned over the different cities in the land of Edom. So it was a who is who passage last week and now we are reading a who did what in the history of the children of Esau, specifically the kings reigning in the different lands.

Much of this is duplicated with dates and duration of each reign in the books of Chronicles and I often compare the stories in each book, sometimes side by side, though I will not do that while we are only in Genesis.

There is not a lot more I can say about the text for today, but next week we will be moving on to the story of Joseph. He is a model of Machiach, having been betrayed, then suffered and finally ruling. The name yosef (Joseph) name means - God will increase - God will enlarge - or God will do again.

We will see how everything Joseph touched prospered, was enlarged, and how his life is one of many repeating models of the coming reign of Mashiach.

These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom, before any king reigned over the Israelites. Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, the name of his city being Dinhabah. Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place. Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the country of Moab, reigned in his place, the name of his city being Avith. Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place. Samlah died, and Shaul of Rehoboth on the Euphrates reigned in his place. Shaul died, and Baal-hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place. Baal-hanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his place, the name of his city being Pau; his wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, daughter of Mezahab.
