A FEW THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT, WHEN GOING TO THE BIG-ISLAND OF HAWAI'I !!

  • Don't be afraid to ask an islander for directions or information.
  • Beware of the homeless, just like anywhere else there can be some aggressive and very needy homeless
  • Beware and very cautious about druggies on the streets, they lurk around everywhere and are very good at pick pocketing

-Everyone for the most part are very friendly

-On the big-island of hawai'i there are some dangerous parts of the island. I would not recommend ever going to anyone. Even if you see nice places in that area you would like to check out, see, or even might want to visit. My words to you is Do not go there!

-This part of the island you should never go venturing at night, especially at night! This place that I am talking about is called "PUNA". There is many things that have happened on this side of the island, unspeakable things, things that should never be spoke a word about.

If you do go to the big-island of Hawai'i and want to go to "Puna" side of the island, please go with a local islander or during the day with friends, take a phone, also realize the deep depths of "Puna" there is no cell phone service at all!  Where there is a lot of people present is best. I am not going to lie there are some very nice views and sean's down in the "Puna District". Nice breathtaking sights . But like what I have said please be cautious and very aware that those of you wanting to go the big-island of hawai'i you have been told about some of the dangers of the parts of the island like "Puna" part by a local islander(myself chantel).

  • If you love sunsets, you just must check out our beaches in the Kona and Waimea. Throughout the distance of Kona to Waimea you can just stop and pick a beach, sit down and watch the sunset. The sunsets are so beautiful and the breezes that come with it is so amazing.

Now you wanna talk about if there is a shopping mall? There is indeed only one mall on the big-island and it is located in the town of Hilo. There are two walmarts on the big-island. One in Hilo and there is one in Kona. There are not many fast food restaurants like you see in the mainland and on the island of oahu. There are however a lot of chinese food places to eat, along with pizza places too.

The hotels on the big-island are very pricey, I can honestly say, if you are staying as a tourist and not a resident from the island's. Local island residents get a discount called "Kamaaina"( Meaning: child or person of the land, born resident) . If you would rather be an outdoors person camping is allowed, and you don't need a permit as long as you are not camping on hawaiian lands which will require you to get a permit. Hawaiian lands meaning any signs reading "KAPU" or a hawaiian word you do not know. "Kapu" means forbidden, keep out, no trespassing, sacred, consecrated or holy.

When venturing the island also keep in mind that the old hawaiians from back in the days, still walk those grounds, they are called night marchers. Any islander will tell you to please respect where you are walking at all times. You will notice stones piled a certain way that's a hawaiian burial ground, or houses that look like were made of dry tall grass or straw, but its really not of those things at all, the hawaiian houses were made from the structure of ocean-cured 'ohi'a logs lashed together. The hawaiians roofs were thickly layered with pili-grass thatching, and the inner of the house , the floors was a mosaic of smooth 'ili 'ili' (small stones, pebbles) gathered from the shore line.

There are also parts of the islands where there are hawaiian hale's that still stand till today. Those hale's are being maintained and kept up with an nothing has been touched or moved from its original spots. There are fee's to enter onto the premises but it is worth it. It would be a must see. Most of the hawaiian hale's can be found in Kailua-kona.

That's all for now, stay tuned for more posts to come

Hawai'i Island Life
Hawai'i Island Life

Imagine waking up every morning and being able to just load up your car and go to the beach an bbq, Imagine being able to just camp where you want and fish (with no permits required). Imagine being able to just walk right down the road to a friends house or go right around the corner to your uncle or auntys house. Imagine fresh breezes under coconut trees and listening to the sounds of the waves rumbling on the black sand beach, rolling the pebbles along the sand with incoming waves.
