To break the monotony of daily life and wash away the week's exhaustion, we set out on a sudden new adventure last Thursday. However, this ride was far more special than any other, because the back seat of my bike was occupied by my better half—my wife. Our destinations: the Porgacha Madhupur Rubber Garden and Madhupur National Park.
The Journey Begins & A Romantic Rainy Interlude:
It was exactly 11:00 AM. After a hearty meal, I revved up the engine and started our bike from Jamalpur city. Passing through Digpait and Chontia Bazar, when our bike entered the Porgacha Madhupur Rubber Garden, the endless canopy of vibrant green took our breath away. But nature seemed to have another plan for us! Out of nowhere, a heavy downpour started. Sheltering from the rain, we spent about 40 minutes tucked away in the forest, watching the jungle come alive in the rain—a truly beautiful and cozy memory with my wife.
Winding Roads & Indigenous Villages:
As soon as the rain stopped, I kicked the bike back to life. Our next stop was Madhupur National Park. Putting the GPS map aside, we decided to take the inner, rustic village roads. What a spectacular route it was! The beautiful winding roads were flanked by gently rolling hillocks, and every now and then, we caught glimpses of the unique, traditional homesteads of the Garo and other indigenous communities. It felt as if we had been transported to a miniature hill tract!
A Glimpse into the Indigenous Culture:
As we rode past the mud and bamboo houses of the tribal communities flanking the rustic roads, we pulled over for a brief moment to converse with a local Garo family. Their warm hospitality was deeply touching. Chatting with them alongside my wife, we learned about their traditional attire, known as Dokmanda, and their unique matriarchal social structure. Realizing how peaceful and culturally rich their way of life is, nestled so close to the hills, brought an profound sense of tranquility to our minds, far removed from the chaos of urban life.
A Quick Feast at the Park Gate:
By 3:30 PM, we arrived at the main gate of the park. The long ride had left us absolutely famished. From a food stall near the gate, we treated ourselves to a delicious, steaming snack of hot shingaras, peaju, crispy chulbuli, and cold drinks.
Childhood Nostalgia & The Call of the Deep Woods:
At 4:00 PM, we bought our entry tickets for 30 BDT each and stepped into Madhupur National Park. Barely 100 yards past the entrance, we came across a charming little picnic spot. There, a local man was blissfully playing a handmade bamboo flute while selling flutes and slingshots (gulti). Overwhelmed by nostalgia, I bought a flute and a slingshot to relive a slice of my childhood. Right next to it was a watchtower, offering a stunning panoramic view of the forest canopy.
Silence and an Eerie Thrill (The Real Adventure):
The real thrill began after that. We headed straight into the deepest parts of the forest, riding along a brick-paved, broken, and muddy track drenched by the recent rain. All around us stood majestic Shal and Gojari trees rising tall from the crimson red soil. There was hardly any human presence; we barely crossed paths with 5 or 6 other tourists along the entire path.
The Deep Mysteries of the Shal Forest:
As we ventured deeper, the towering Shal and Gojari trees formed a thick canopy, almost entirely eclipsing the afternoon sky. The earthy, damp smell of the soil after the rain combined with the ancient silence of the woods wrapped everything in a mysterious shroud. Save for the occasional cry of an unfamiliar wild bird or the rustle of falling leaves, the wilderness was dead quiet. While the raw beauty of the forest was enchanting, it also conjured an eerie, otherworldly atmosphere. As my bike tires occasionally slipped on the wet mud and broken bricks, my wife held onto me tightly from the back seat. In that very moment, thrill and a sense of raw romance blended beautifully.
Halfway through, we came across the Monkey Breeding Center. Breaking the heavy silence of the woods, a few monkeys—holding their tiny babies close to their chests—approached us looking for food. It was an incredibly heartwarming sight to witness!
An Endless Path...
Bidding farewell to the monkeys, we resumed our ride, and the silence of the forest seemed to deepen even further. Everything was dead quiet, save for the hum of our bike’s engine and the distant buzz of cicadas. It gave us an eerie, goosebump-inducing sensation! No matter how far we rode, the path just didn't seem to end. The clock was ticking, and the shadows of the forest were growing darker. To be honest, a subtle chill of fear crept into our hearts—what if this path never ends? My wife was getting a bit scared too, but looking back, that very thrill made the adventure so much more exhilarating.
The Relief of the Highway & A Spectacular Sight:
After riding through the dense jungle for nearly 30 continuous minutes, the exit gate leading to the highway suddenly opened up before our eyes. A deep sigh of relief escaped our lungs; a sense of absolute peace washed over us! Finally, we paved our way onto the Mymensingh-Madhupur Highway.
And this highway stretch turned out to be my absolute favorite part of the trip. On both sides of the road, countless monkeys were standing with their entire families, waiting patiently to cross the road. I deeply wished to pull over and snap some photos, but fearing a sudden primate attack and keeping my wife’s safety as my top priority, I didn't take the risk. That frame remains safely captured only in our eyes.
The Sweet Aroma of Pineapples & Heading Home:
About 5 to 6 kilometers before reaching Madhupur town, the roadside local markets were bustling with traders selling fresh pineapples. Massive loads of Madhupur’s famous pineapples were being stacked onto vans, trucks, and other vehicles. The air was so heavily perfumed with the sweet, intoxicating aroma of pineapples that it was impossible to resist! The bustling pineapple markets felt like a local festival. We learned that these specific varieties, locally called Jaldugi and Calendar, are famous all over Bangladesh. We pulled over and bought a large, freshly harvested pineapple. As it was sliced and served to us, the very first bite of its intensely sweet, rich juice instantly washed away all our exhaustion. Grown organically without any harmful chemicals, its flavor was miles ahead of anything found in city markets. My wife smiled and said, "Just for the taste of this pineapple, one could return to Madhupur over and over again!"
With the sweet taste of pineapple still lingering, we rode past the Madhupur bus stand, making our way through Dhanbari and Digpait to finally back into our beloved Jamalpur city by evening.
This bike ride—filled with thrill, silence, rain, romance, and pure love—will forever be etched in the pages of our memories. Exploring the raw beauty of nature next to the person you love is a feeling like no other!
