Inspiration in a specimen jar

Selling Ice to Eskimos and Urine to Children -Inspiration in a cute jar of urine

By Harry Maximillian | HarryMaximillian | 20 May 2023

The other day I was walking through a candy store with my kids when I spotted a stand selling small jars of urine.

When I looked closer I realized it wasn’t urine after all. Of course it wasn’t! I’m sure you are thinking. For which store in their right minds would sell jars of urine? In fact the product was sour liquid candy with the brand name ‘URINE’ packaged in specimen jars.

Above is the picture of the product just in case you thought I have totally lost my mind.

The experience got me thinking…

If you can sell something marketed as urine you can sell anything. Seeing these pots of ‘urine’ gave me inspiration. And it should do the same for you.

When someone denigrates your latest business idea and insists ‘no one is ever going to buy that crap’ cast your mind back to these cute little yellow pots with the urinal poster.

Negativity is everywhere. It has stopped more business ideas in their tracks than anything else including lack of money or lack of technical know how.

These jars of urine should be a motivator to anyone who has doubts about their first or latest idea and their ability to execute their plan. As they say in the financial world, insurance isn’t bought, it's sold. The same applies to pretty much every product or service you stumble across. If you put your heart and soul into anything you do you will succeed. It is doubt which is the killer. If you doubt your ability then these seeds of doubt will grow into weeds and suffocate your enthusiasm. Prospects will spot that doubt a mile away and won’t buy from you.

Imagine telling your parents at Sunday lunch about your latest idea.

‘Ma, I just had the greatest idea ever. Selling urine in bottles.’

Your mother’s response would be something like, ‘You are totally out of your mind!’

Six months later you return to the scene of the crime and show your parents your bank statement which displays a healthy $500,000. Your parents are speechless, until your mother utters the words,

‘You just got lucky son.’

Onlookers don’t appreciate the hard work and dedication you put in behind the scenes to get on the map. The late nights, the last of your savings you invested to fund the first production run, the quality issues and the countless rejections.

The moral of this story is anything is possible. When people are belittling your idea and predicting your failure just remember the bottled urine and repeat, if they can sell urine I can sell anything!

What a difference a few months make. Rewind the clock six months and the common thread was, the metaverse is the next big thing. The same commentators have now jumped ship occupying the good ship Doom and Gloom. That doom and gloom is largely a result of the challenges facing Meta (Facebook), Walmart, Sandbox and Decentraland. Don't let the negativity distract you from the bigger picture. The metaverse is a technology in its infancy and is only going to grow in popularity and relevance. Stay in the game.
