With the pandemic still chugging, natural disasters becoming more a norm than a rarity, and poverty spreading to folks that never thought it would ever happen to them, I think it's time for a Universal Basic Income.
Now I'm far from having the resources and connections to make such a thing happen. Hell, I'm far from having the resources to pay bills on time. But if I did, This is how I'd do UBI.
Imagine this. A pre-paid debit card tied with your social security number, that would be issued upon driving age. And would have a use it or lose it feature.
For example, let's say $1000 was sent to it on the 1st of the month. And you feel you don't need it. The amount on the card would not increase the following month. It would be still $1000.00 .
If you used almost all of it, and your remaining balance at the end of the month is $0.77, on the 1st it would be "reset" to $1000.
As for the amount to be sent to the card, it could be based on several factors, such as mailing address, number of kids, married, single, widowed, etc.
What about use restrictions? How about none? You could use it for a wise purchase like dried beans, or a silly purchase like a truck bed full of jelly beans.
On how it could be funded, how about a stablecoin cryptocurrency?
The card would be deactivated upon the creation of the death certificate of its user.
So that's my thoughts on what could be a successful method to do UBI. Oh, I almost forgot. Here's some digital art I created on the subject.
