Trump’s Second Administration Is the Richest Yet: 57 Officials Have Fortunes of at Least $100 Million

A closer look at the unprecedented wealth inside Donald Trump’s second administration, from Howard Lutnick and Stephen Feinbe

Washington has never seen this many fortunes gathered inside one administration.
There is a number that immediately changes the way Donald Trump’s second administration looks: 57. That is the number of Trump administration officials identified by Public Citizen as having personal assets of at least $100 million, excluding the president himself. The group includes 40 senior officials working across the federal government and 17 U.S. ambassadors, meaning that the concentration of wealth reaches well beyond the Cabinet and into the diplomatic service. Eight of the 23 Cabinet members also fall into the $100 million-or-more category. The comparison with recent presidents is striking without needing much interpretation. George W. Bush had five officials in that range, Barack Obama had three and Joe Biden had five, for a combined total of 13. Trump’s 57 therefore represent more than four times the number found across those three administrations together. There is an important distinction here, because these figures describe wealth and declared assets, not annual salaries. Government officials are not being paid hundreds of millions of dollars by Washington; rather, many arrived in public office after decades in finance, business, entertainment, investment or inherited wealth. That distinction matters, but it does not make the underlying story any less remarkable.

The fortunes behind the headline are changing fast

Some of the people inside this administration are not simply wealthy on paper; their fortunes have continued to move dramatically while they have been in office. Howard Lutnick is perhaps the clearest example. The Commerce Secretary, who spent decades at Cantor Fitzgerald, was already a billionaire when he entered government, but Forbes estimated in September 2026 that his wealth, together with his family’s, had climbed to roughly $7.3 billion, helped heavily by the value of Cantor Fitzgerald’s indirect stake in Tether. Stephen Feinberg, Trump’s Deputy Secretary of Defense and the co-founder of Cerberus Capital Management, is another member of the administration operating on an extraordinary financial scale, with Forbes estimating his fortune at around $6.3 billion in its latest real-time figure. Linda McMahon, meanwhile, brought decades of wealth from the WWE business she built with Vince McMahon and remains one of the administration’s best-known billionaire figures. Then there is Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, whose fortune was estimated by Forbes at about $2.3 billion in April after rising roughly 15% during his first year working for the government. These numbers should not be treated as a government payroll or as guaranteed cash sitting in a bank account. They are estimates of assets whose values can rise and fall. But taken together, they explain why this White House is so different from the traditional image of an administration dominated by career politicians and public servants.

The comparison with Biden, Obama and Bush tells the bigger story

The simplest way to understand the scale of the change is to put the Trump numbers next to those of his immediate predecessors. Public Citizen’s research found five officials worth at least $100 million in the Bush administration, three under Obama and five under Biden. Trump has 57. A separate Forbes analysis reaches a similar conclusion when it looks specifically at Cabinet wealth rather than the wider administration: in August 2025, Forbes estimated Trump’s Cabinet at about $7.5 billion in combined wealth, excluding Trump, more than twice the roughly $3.2 billion estimated for his 2019 Cabinet and dramatically above the approximately $110 million attributed to Joe Biden’s Cabinet in 2021. The methodologies are not identical, so these figures should not be treated as if they came from one standardized government balance sheet. Still, the direction is unmistakable. Trump has brought an unusually large number of people from private equity, Wall Street, major corporations, entertainment, technology and investment management into senior government positions. That does not automatically make them unqualified, and wealth by itself is not evidence of misconduct. What it does change is the social and economic distance between the people making policy and the average American household, particularly at a time when questions about inflation, taxes, housing, wages and the cost of living remain central to American politics.

America has always had very rich people in government — Andrew Mellon is the classic example

The idea of wealthy businessmen entering government did not begin with Trump, and any serious historical comparison has to acknowledge that. One of the most famous examples is Andrew Mellon, the Pittsburgh banking and industrial magnate who served as Treasury Secretary under Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover from 1921 to 1932. Mellon was already one of the richest Americans of his era before taking office, and his enormous fortune came from banking, aluminum, oil, coal and industrial investments. Historical estimates of his wealth vary considerably, which is itself a reminder of how difficult it is to compare fortunes across a century. The National Park Service records that his wealth reached extraordinary levels, while other historical accounts have placed his fortune at several hundred million dollars at its peak. In modern purchasing-power terms, that would represent several billions. So it would be misleading to say Trump created the first administration populated by extremely rich people. Even Trump’s first transition in 2016 was described by the Washington Post as the creation of the richest administration in modern American history, with the Bush Cabinet of 2001 then estimated at about $250 million in inflation-adjusted wealth. The difference today is not simply that there are billionaires in government. It is the sheer number of them and the way substantial fortunes are spread through the Cabinet, federal agencies and diplomatic appointments at the same time.

The real question is not whether rich people can govern, but how private wealth interacts with public power

That distinction is where the debate becomes much more serious. A billionaire is not automatically corrupt, just as a politician with modest personal wealth is not automatically immune from conflicts of interest. The concern arises when a senior official’s personal investments, former companies, family holdings or business relationships overlap with the industries affected by government decisions. Public financial disclosures collected by ProPublica show just how complicated these arrangements can become, with officials reporting portfolios containing stocks, private companies, real estate, trusts, investment funds and other assets. Howard Lutnick’s case is particularly notable because his fortune is closely connected to the financial world and has changed significantly since he entered government. Steve Witkoff presents a different version of the same problem: Forbes has documented how his wealth has been connected not only to real estate but also to cryptocurrency investments involving World Liberty Financial, the crypto venture linked to the Trump family. None of those facts, by themselves, establishes an illegal act, and it is important not to turn questions about ethics into accusations that the evidence does not support. But they do explain why financial disclosures, recusals, divestments and independent ethics oversight matter. The issue is not whether successful people should be allowed to serve their country. The issue is whether the public can be confident that government decisions are being made for public reasons rather than becoming entangled with private financial interests.

The wealth record is real, but the bigger story is about trust

The most interesting conclusion may be that the number 57 is only the beginning of the story. Trump’s second administration has created a level of concentration of personal wealth that stands out clearly against the three preceding administrations, while the fortunes of some of its most prominent members have continued to rise. Forbes currently places Trump himself at roughly $6.9 billion, based on its latest real-time estimate available in September 2026. Lutnick is estimated at around $7.3 billion, while Feinberg is in the $6 billion range, making the financial landscape around the president extraordinary even before counting the dozens of other officials and ambassadors whose assets reach into the hundreds of millions. Yet history also tells us that extreme wealth and political power have crossed paths before, from Andrew Mellon to the business-heavy administrations of more recent decades. The real difference today is the scale and breadth of the phenomenon. For ordinary Americans, the question is not simply how much money the people in Washington have. It is whether people who live at the very top of the wealth ladder can still understand the pressures faced by families dealing with rent, mortgages, food prices, healthcare and wages — and whether institutions are strong enough to keep private wealth from becoming too closely intertwined with public decisions. That is a conversation worth having without reducing everything to political slogans. Does enormous personal wealth make someone better equipped to govern, or does it create too much distance from everyday life? And when an administration contains 57 officials with fortunes of at least $100 million, should Americans see that as a sign of exceptional experience or a warning about the concentration of power?
