Donald Trump and Xi Jinping met at the White House on September 24 for one of the most closely watched diplomatic encounters of 2026.
The ceremony was deliberately impressive. Xi received a full state welcome, Trump personally greeted him, and the day ended with a White House state dinner attended by some of the biggest names in American technology and business.
But behind the carefully staged images, the summit was about something much harder to manage: how Washington and Beijing can compete without allowing their rivalry to turn into another major confrontation.
Trade was central to the talks, but artificial intelligence, rare earths, Taiwan and Iran were also part of the discussion.

The clearest result was a temporary trade extension

The most tangible outcome was economic.
The United States and China agreed to extend their existing trade truce for another two months.
That decision gives negotiators additional time and reduces the immediate possibility of another tariff escalation.
It is important, however, not to describe this as a comprehensive new trade agreement.
Tariffs, Chinese purchases, rare-earth supplies and technology restrictions remain unresolved.
The summit therefore bought time rather than settling the larger dispute.

AI is becoming impossible to separate from geopolitics

Artificial intelligence has become one of the most important areas of US-China competition.
Both countries are investing heavily in advanced models, computing capacity, semiconductors and industrial applications.
At the same time, AI introduces risks that neither government can easily manage alone.
The summit therefore included discussion of continued communication around artificial intelligence.
That is an interesting contrast: Washington and Beijing are competing for technological leadership while also exploring ways to keep the competition from becoming completely uncontrolled.

Rare earths remain a major bargaining issue

Rare-earth materials are another crucial part of the relationship.
They are used throughout modern manufacturing and technology, while China occupies a central position in global supply chains.
For the United States, reducing strategic dependence is increasingly important.
For China, its position in the supply chain provides significant negotiating leverage.
The issue remains unresolved, and the two-month trade extension simply gives both sides more time to negotiate.

Taiwan remains a much harder problem

The meeting did not remove the fundamental disagreement over Taiwan.
Beijing considers Taiwan part of China and opposes independence.
Washington maintains close unofficial relations with Taipei and supports its ability to defend itself.
Chinese officials said Xi reiterated Beijing's position during the meeting and urged Washington to handle the Taiwan issue carefully.
That underlines an important distinction: economic negotiations may produce temporary compromises, but strategic disagreements are much harder to settle.

Iran adds another layer

Iran was another sensitive part of the summit.
Xi told Trump that China supported returning to the terms of the June memorandum between the United States and Iran, which included an end to hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the US naval blockade, according to Chinese state media as reported by ANSA.
The following day, the US ambassador to China said Trump had told Xi that Washington considered Chinese assistance to Iran unacceptable.
That exchange shows how difficult it is to separate the economic relationship from wider geopolitical conflicts.

Two leaders, two very different priorities

Trump wants a relationship in which the United States can negotiate from economic and technological leverage.
Xi wants stability while protecting China's strategic priorities.
Those objectives overlap in some areas.
They collide in others.
The summit therefore produced a striking combination of friendly public language and unresolved disagreements.
At the state dinner, both leaders emphasized the value of cooperation and the long history of US-China relations.
But the central disputes did not disappear.

What the summit really achieved

The most accurate description is probably not “breakthrough”.
It was a controlled step forward in diplomacy.
The trade truce was extended.
Communication on AI remains possible.
The two leaders maintained direct contact.
But Taiwan, rare earths, technology restrictions and Iran remain difficult issues.
Reuters' assessment after the meeting also highlighted the limited evidence of breakthroughs on the major disputes despite the highly symbolic setting.

The real test comes next

The summit created time.
Now Washington and Beijing have to decide what to do with it.
The next two months will show whether the temporary trade extension can become the foundation for a broader arrangement or simply another pause before renewed disputes.
For now, Trump and Xi have chosen dialogue over immediate escalation.
That does not mean the rivalry is over.
It means both sides still believe the rivalry has to be managed.
