There is no single way to define a great airport.
For one traveller, the most important thing is a fast security check. For another, it is a direct train into the city. Some passengers care about the number of airlines and destinations, while others remember an airport for something much simpler: whether the journey through the terminal felt easy or exhausting.
That is why the 2026 airport rankings are particularly interesting.
The World Consumer Airport Index 2026 places Barcelona-El Prat first among the world's largest airports and Rome Fiumicino second. Milan Malpensa also makes the top five in the separate smaller-airport category.
But another major international ranking, Skytrax's World Airport Awards, produces a very different result: Singapore Changi is number one, while Fiumicino is seventh.
Rather than being a contradiction, the difference shows how much methodology matters.

Barcelona leads the large-airport category

The World Consumer Airport Index analysed 60 airports and divided them according to annual passenger traffic.
The threshold for the large-airport group is 47.2 million passengers per year.
Barcelona-El Prat came first with an adjusted I-distance score of 23.835.
The index looks at practical aspects of the passenger journey, including connectivity, transport access, airport infrastructure, airline choice, security waiting times and operational efficiency.
Barcelona's average security wait was highlighted at around three minutes, one of the factors contributing to its strong result.

Rome Fiumicino is second

For Italy, the headline is clear: Rome Fiumicino ranks second among the large airports in the 2026 Consumer Index.
Its adjusted score is 22.948.
The result fits into a broader period of strong international recognition for the Rome airport.
Fiumicino passed the 51-million-passenger mark in 2025 and also retained a leading position in European airport awards.
In 2026, ACI EUROPE confirmed the airport as the best European hub in the category of airports handling more than 40 million passengers, while Skytrax placed it seventh worldwide.
Different organisations, different measurements, but a similar message: Fiumicino has become a major reference point in European aviation.

Italy appears again in the second category.
Milan Malpensa is ranked fifth among airports handling fewer than 47.2 million passengers per year.
Its adjusted score is 23.135.
Only Düsseldorf, Zurich, Copenhagen and Helsinki are ahead.

For Italy, having both Fiumicino and Malpensa in the top five of their respective categories is one of the most notable elements of the 2026 index.

Düsseldorf shows why size is not everything

Düsseldorf is particularly interesting because it scores higher than Barcelona on the index's numerical scale.
But the two airports belong to different categories.
Düsseldorf is first among airports below the 47.2-million-passenger threshold, while Barcelona is first among the largest international hubs.
The German airport was credited with 67 airlines and 171 destinations, alongside extremely short security waiting times.
This is an important distinction when reading airport rankings.
A higher score in one category does not automatically mean that the airport should be considered universally better than the winner of another category.

Tokyo Haneda's surprising drop

One of the most striking changes in the Consumer Index concerns Tokyo Haneda.
The airport was previously at the top of the large-airport category but falls to ninth in 2026.
The report points to several factors, including a relatively limited airline selection, restrictions on night flights and an average security wait of around 15 minutes.
It is a useful reminder that rankings can change significantly depending on what they measure.

And then there is Singapore Changi

This is where the story becomes even more interesting.
The Consumer Choice Center places Singapore Changi 15th among the large airports.
Skytrax, however, names Changi the World's Best Airport 2026.
Skytrax's ranking is based on its World Airport Survey, while the Consumer Index combines a different set of practical indicators.
So both rankings can produce very different results without one necessarily invalidating the other.
The question is not simply "Which airport is number one?"
The more useful question is: number one according to which measurement?

They think about whether a connection requires a long walk or another security check.
They think about what happens when their flight is delayed.
Those practical details are exactly why the 2026 Consumer Index is interesting.
Its focus is less about prestige and more about the practical passenger journey.

Italy's airport picture in 2026

The Italian result is therefore worth watching.
Rome Fiumicino is second in the World Consumer Airport Index's large-airport category and seventh in Skytrax's global ranking.
Milan Malpensa is fifth in the Consumer Index's smaller-airport category.
Fiumicino has also received major European recognition from ACI EUROPE.
These are different awards and should not be merged into one universal score. But taken together, they show that Italian airports are increasingly visible in international assessments of airport quality.
And perhaps that is the most useful conclusion for travellers.
The best airport is not necessarily the one with the most spectacular terminal.
Sometimes it is simply the one that makes the journey feel easier.
