Sudan’s civil war has moved far beyond its initial epicenter in Khartoum and is now reshaping entire regions in silence. One of the most affected areas is Kordofan, where the city of El Obeid has become a growing focal point of instability, humanitarian pressure, and disrupted civilian life.

What is happening there is not a sudden escalation, but a gradual collapse of infrastructure and security conditions driven by the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). As frontlines have shifted westward, Kordofan has gained strategic importance due to its geographic position linking northern Sudan, Darfur, and southern transport corridors.

This positioning has turned the region into both a logistical asset and a battlefield. El Obeid, once an important commercial hub, now faces repeated disruption to supply chains, limited access to essential goods, and increasing pressure from surrounding instability. Humanitarian organizations continue to report growing difficulties in reaching vulnerable populations due to insecurity and restricted movement.

Across Sudan, the scale of displacement is among the highest globally, with millions forced to leave their homes and critical shortages affecting food systems, healthcare, and basic services. In and around El Obeid, displaced populations continue to increase, placing additional strain on already weakened infrastructure.

The origins of the conflict trace back to a failed political transition and deep divisions between the SAF and RSF, originally part of the same security architecture. Disagreements over military integration, political control, and access to economic resources—particularly gold and agricultural assets—eventually escalated into full-scale armed confrontation.

International organizations, including the United Nations, have repeatedly warned of a worsening humanitarian situation, describing limited access to aid and rising risks of famine in several areas. Despite these warnings, global political response remains fragmented, with diplomatic efforts largely unable to produce a stable ceasefire or enforce lasting agreements on the ground.

The conflict also highlights a broader structural issue affecting parts of Africa, where weak governance, fragmented armed power, and resource-driven tensions continue to fuel instability. Without stronger institutional frameworks and regional coordination, similar crises risk repeating across other vulnerable states.

Short-term solutions remain limited but are widely considered urgent. These include temporary humanitarian ceasefires, secured aid corridors into cities like El Obeid, restoration of critical supply routes, and increased international funding for emergency relief operations. However, all of these measures depend on cooperation between warring factions that currently shows little stability.

Despite its scale, Sudan’s crisis remains underrepresented in global public discourse compared to other international conflicts. This lack of attention has raised concerns among humanitarian observers, who warn that prolonged silence may deepen the severity of the crisis.

In Kordofan, El Obeid stands as a reflection of this broader reality: a city not yet fully разрушed, but increasingly stretched beyond its capacity to function under war conditions. The question now is whether Sudan’s conflict will remain a regional emergency or finally be recognized as one of the defining humanitarian crises of this period.
