Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol sentenced to 30 years over abuse of power and a military-linked political crisis.

South Korea’s Ex-President Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison

The former President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison following a high-profile court ruling that marks one of the most significant political decisions in the country’s recent history.

According to reports from international outlets including Reuters, Associated Press and Al Jazeera, the verdict is linked to allegations involving military drone operations near the border with North Korea in 2024 and broader accusations of abuse of presidential power.

The court found that the operations in question were either authorized or knowingly tolerated at the highest level of government, with prosecutors arguing that they were part of a broader strategy to escalate tensions with Pyongyang. The alleged objective, according to the ruling, was to create a political environment conducive to the imposition of emergency measures, including martial law.

Yoon has strongly denied all allegations, insisting that any military activity near the border was a defensive response to repeated provocations from North Korea, including cross-border incidents involving balloons and propaganda materials.

The case is part of a wider legal collapse of the former administration, which has been under intense judicial scrutiny following a constitutional crisis that began during his presidency. That crisis included an attempted declaration of martial law in 2024, which was quickly reversed amid political backlash and public protests.

Following the collapse of that measure, Yoon was impeached and removed from office, triggering a series of criminal investigations that have since expanded into multiple parallel trials. The 30-year sentence adds to previous rulings connected to insurrection-related charges and alleged abuse of authority.

Political analysts describe the situation as unprecedented in modern South Korean democracy, noting that it reflects deep institutional tensions between executive power and judicial accountability.

Reactions inside South Korea remain divided. Supporters of the former president claim the proceedings are politically motivated, while critics argue that the ruling reinforces democratic safeguards and the rule of law.

Yoon’s legal team has already indicated that it intends to appeal the decision, meaning the case is far from over and may continue to shape South Korea’s political landscape for years.
