After nearly eight years of legal disputes, Shakira has secured one of the biggest courtroom victories of her career.
A Spanish court ruled that the singer should not have been considered a tax resident in Spain during 2011, forcing authorities to return more than €60 million in taxes, penalties and accumulated interest.

The case instantly exploded online because it was never just about money. It became a global debate about celebrity taxation, public image, media pressure and how governments pursue high-profile figures.

Spanish prosecutors argued that Shakira had effectively lived in Spain while in a relationship with former football star Gerard Piqué.

Under Spanish law, anyone spending more than 183 days per year in the country can be classified as a tax resident.

Authorities claimed the singer’s life and economic interests were centered in Spain. Shakira’s legal team denied this for years, insisting she was traveling constantly for international tours and business obligations.

The court eventually agreed with her defense.

According to the ruling, investigators could only prove that Shakira spent around 163 days in Spain during 2011 — below the legal threshold required for tax residency.

That detail completely changed the outcome of the case.

As a result:
previous penalties were overturned
millions already paid or frozen must be returned
Spain may owe additional interest payments
The total reimbursement could exceed €60 million.

However, the ruling only applies to the 2011 fiscal year. It does not erase Shakira’s earlier settlement involving tax issues from 2012 to 2014.

Following the decision, the singer released emotional statements describing the past years as extremely painful.

She said the case caused:
reputational damage
emotional stress
sleepless nights
negative effects on her family and health
Shakira also criticized Spanish tax authorities, claiming she had been publicly treated as guilty before the courts had fully ruled on the case.

Those comments quickly went viral across social media platforms.

Spanish authorities could still attempt a further appeal, meaning the legal story may not be entirely over yet.

Still, the ruling represents a huge reputational win for Shakira after years of headlines, investigations and controversy.

For many observers, this case could now become an important example in future international tax disputes involving celebrities and global business figures.
