The new Serie A season needed only one weekend to create its first real talking points.
There were dominant wins, late winners, young Italian players making statements and two teams immediately standing above the rest of the opening table.
Roma finished the first round on top. Inter are right behind them.
Both collected three points, but Roma's 4-0 demolition of Fiorentina gave Gian Piero Gasperini's side the better goal difference.
Inter, meanwhile, opened their title defense with a convincing 4-1 victory over newly promoted Monza.
Behind them, Napoli, Milan, Atalanta, Juventus, Lazio and Cagliari also started with wins.
It is obviously too early to talk seriously about the title race.
But the first weekend has already offered plenty to discuss.

Roma's attacking partnership steals the show
The loudest statement came from the Stadio Olimpico.
Roma defeated Fiorentina 4-0, and the scoreline tells only part of the story.
The real headline was Donyell Malen.
The Dutch forward scored three times, while Paulo Dybala created all three of his goals.
Malen opened the scoring in the 27th minute after a powerful move from Dybala created the opportunity.
The second came eight minutes into the second half.
Then, in the 60th minute, the combination worked again.
Dybala delivered.
Malen finished.
The fourth goal came from Nicolò Pisilli in the 86th minute, after the young midfielder reacted quickest inside the box.
It was the kind of opening night that immediately changes expectations.
Roma had already qualified for the Champions League the previous season, but Gasperini's new campaign began with a performance suggesting the team may have even greater attacking possibilities.
Diretta's player ratings reflected the difference.
Malen received a 9.7 Flashscore Rating, the highest score of the entire first matchday, while Dybala received 9.1 after providing the three assists.
One game cannot establish a title contender.
But it can certainly make people pay attention.

Inter send a message after a difficult first half
The defending champions were not perfect. They were still very convincing.
Inter began their title defense at home against Monza.
Hakan Calhanoglu put the champions ahead after six minutes with a long-range strike.
Monza, however, refused to collapse.
Gustavo Varela equalized in the 29th minute, and the visitors reached halftime level at 1-1.
Then Inter changed the game.
Piotr Zielinski scored in the 48th minute.
Pio Esposito added a spectacular goal nine minutes later.
Yann Bisseck completed the 4-1 victory in the 63rd minute.
Three second-half goals transformed what had looked like a complicated opening into a comfortable win.
Pio Esposito was one of the standout performers.
The young Italian forward scored with a clever backheel and immediately became one of the most discussed players of the weekend.
For Cristian Chivu, that is particularly encouraging.
A championship-winning squad needs established stars, but it also needs players capable of changing matches from the bench or stepping into bigger roles.
Inter already appears to have both.

Napoli leave Genoa with a late statement
Napoli waited, suffered and then struck twice.
Massimiliano Allegri's team did not have an easy evening at Genoa.
The hosts played with energy and intensity, especially during the first half.
Napoli struggled to create clear chances.
The match changed after Allegri made his substitutions.
Kevin De Bruyne entered the game and eventually opened the scoring in the 82nd minute.
Five minutes later, Antonio Vergara made it 2-0.
Two substitutes had therefore produced the decisive moment.
That is an important detail for Napoli.
The team did not need to dominate for 90 minutes to win.
It needed to remain patient until the right players found the right spaces.
The victory also gives Allegri an ideal start in a season in which Napoli will be expected to compete near the top of the table.

Milan discover a teenage headline-maker
Milan's first win came with an unexpected face at the center of it.
The Rossoneri defeated Torino 2-1 away from home.
The decisive sequence came during the second half.
Alphadjo Cissé scored in the 64th minute.
Two minutes later Adrien Rabiot doubled Milan's advantage.
Torino eventually pulled one back through Che Adams in stoppage time, but Milan held on.
Cissé's performance was particularly interesting.
The Italian attacking midfielder, born in 2006, was given a starting role and immediately rewarded his coach with a goal.
The result also fits into one of the biggest stories of the opening weekend: young Italian players are receiving opportunities.
Cissé was among the 14 Italian Under-20 players to appear during the first matchday.
That may eventually become one of the most important stories of the season.

Juventus win, but Frosinone nearly steal the ending
Juventus got the three points. Frosinone got the final scare.
Luciano Spalletti's Juventus controlled large parts of the first half at the Benito Stirpe.
The pressure eventually produced a goal.
Bremer rose above the defense and headed Juventus in front in the 22nd minute.
The Bianconeri continued to create opportunities, but they failed to add a second goal.
That became dangerous.
In stoppage time, Frosinone defender Gabriele Calvani hit the crossbar with a header.
The ball stayed out.
Juventus escaped with a 1-0 victory and three important points.
It was an efficient opening rather than a spectacular one.
And that may actually be useful for a team trying to rebuild confidence.
There will be more attractive performances.
For now, Spalletti has the result he wanted.

Atalanta start Sarri's era with a win
Atalanta also opened the season with three points.
Maurizio Sarri's competitive debut began with a 2-1 home victory over Sassuolo.
Giacomo Raspadori opened the scoring after only six minutes.
Sassuolo responded through Odenthal.
The match remained competitive before Nikola Krstovic restored Atalanta's advantage.
The 2-1 result gives Sarri a positive start, although there are still plenty of tactical details to develop.
Atalanta are one of the teams that could become particularly interesting once the new system settles.

Lecce win in Venice
Lecce's opening day was about patience.
Venezia returned to Serie A with a packed home stadium and plenty of enthusiasm.
The hosts created pressure during the first half but could not convert their opportunities.
Lecce punished them after halftime.
Gorter scored in the 46th minute.
Tiago Gabriel added the second goal in the 80th minute with a header.
Lecce won 2-0.
Goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone was also one of the key performers, making several important interventions during the match.
The result immediately puts Lecce among the six teams with three points after the opening round.
For Venezia, the return to Serie A could hardly have started in a more frustrating way.

Cagliari's young midfielder decides the game
One of the most interesting individual stories came from Parma.
The game appeared to be heading toward a goalless draw.
Then Alessandro Romano changed everything.
The Cagliari midfielder scored in the 79th minute to give his team a 1-0 victory.
Romano is a 2006-born Italian player and completed the full 90 minutes.
His performance was another reminder that the first weekend was not only about established stars.
A new generation is beginning to appear in Serie A.
That could be especially relevant for the Italian national team in the months ahead.

Udinese and Como share the points
The opening draw was far from boring.

Lazio leave Bologna with Frattesi's winner
The final Monday evening before Roma-Fiorentina produced another away victory.
Bologna hosted Lazio at the Dall'Ara.
The match was tight, with both sides struggling to create a decisive breakthrough.
Then came Davide Frattesi.
The midfielder scored in the 59th minute and gave Lazio a 1-0 lead.
Bologna tried to respond but could not find the equalizer.
The victory gives Gennaro Gattuso three points from his opening league game.
For Frattesi, meanwhile, it was a dream way to introduce himself to the Lazio supporters.

It is obviously too early to read too much into this table.
The important detail is the density at the top.
Seven teams have three points.
That means one weekend has already created a large group at the top, with goal difference currently separating them.

The Italian youth movement
The first matchday also produced a story that goes beyond club football.
Before the final two games, 13 Italian players born in 2006 or later had already appeared.
After the complete first round, the number reached 14.
Sky Sport reported that after the first eight matches, Italian players represented around 30% of those used: 76 out of 254.
The number of young players, however, was particularly notable.
Players such as Cissé, Alessandro Romano, Pio Esposito, Diego Mascardi, Alessio Cacciamani and Matteo Palma were among the younger Italians given real playing time.
Several started matches.
Others came on during the game.
This matters because Italy has spent years discussing the development of domestic talent.
The first matchday cannot solve that problem.
But it can provide evidence that some clubs are becoming more willing to trust young players when the competitive pressure arrives.

What does the first weekend actually tell us?
Not everything. But certainly enough to make the next few weeks interesting.
Roma have already found an exciting attacking connection between Dybala and Malen.
Inter have shown that even when the game becomes uncomfortable, they possess enough depth to change it quickly.
Napoli have demonstrated that substitutions can decide matches.
Milan have found an unexpected young scorer.
Juventus have three points but still need greater control over games.
Atalanta have started Sarri's era with a win.
Lazio have a new midfielder already making an impact.
And Serie A has given Italian teenagers more opportunities than many expected.
The most important lesson is therefore not the table.
It is the number of questions now waiting for answers.
Was Roma's 4-0 a warning to the rest of the league?
Can Inter defend the title with the same authority?
Will Napoli's new signings make the difference?
Can Cissé and the other young Italians turn one good match into a season?
We will not know yet.
But after one weekend, Serie A has already given supporters a reason to keep watching.
And that is exactly what an opening round is supposed to do.
