Nitto Santapaola Dead at 87: Inside the Life of a Powerful Sicilian Mafia Boss

The long and controversial life of Nitto Santapaola, one of the most powerful mafia bosses in Sicily’s recent history, has come to an end. The historic leader of the Catania mafia died on March 2, 2026, at the age of 87 while serving multiple life sentences under Italy’s strict 41-bis prison regime.

Santapaola, whose real name was Benedetto Santapaola, spent more than three decades behind bars after becoming one of the most feared figures in Sicilian organized crime during the 1980s and 1990s.

Born in Catania on June 4, 1938, Santapaola grew up in the neighborhood of San Cristoforo, an area historically associated with organized crime. Over time, he rose through the ranks of the local mafia structure until eventually becoming the head of the powerful Santapaola-Ercolano clan, a criminal organization closely linked to Cosa Nostra.

During the 1980s the group expanded its influence across eastern Sicily, controlling major illegal activities including drug trafficking, extortion, and infiltration into public contracts and local businesses.

The rise of Santapaola also coincided with one of the most violent periods in the history of the Sicilian mafia. Between 1981 and 1983, Catania was shaken by a brutal internal mafia conflict that left dozens of people dead. The war ultimately strengthened Santapaola’s position and reinforced his alliance with the faction of the Corleonesi led by Totò Riina.

Over the years, Italian courts convicted Santapaola in numerous trials for mafia association and multiple murders. Investigators also linked him to major criminal operations tied to the power struggles inside the Sicilian mafia during that period.

After years as a fugitive, Santapaola was finally captured in 1993 in Catania. His arrest marked a turning point in the fight against organized crime in eastern Sicily. From that moment onward he remained imprisoned under the strict 41-bis regime, a special detention system designed to isolate mafia bosses and prevent them from continuing to command criminal organizations from prison.

In recent years his health had deteriorated due to age-related medical conditions. Despite receiving medical supervision, he died while still serving his sentence.

For decades Santapaola had been considered one of the key figures of the Sicilian mafia in the eastern part of the island. His death symbolically marks the disappearance of another protagonist of the violent mafia era that dominated Italy’s criminal landscape in the late twentieth century.

However, experts and investigators emphasize that organized crime has not disappeared. Mafia groups have evolved and today operate in more discreet ways, often focusing on financial crimes, corruption, and money laundering.
