MATTARELLA MOVES NATION WITH 2026 NEW YEAR'S SPEECH

On December 31, 2025, millions of Italians tuned in for President Sergio Mattarella's traditional New Year's Eve address, a deeply emotional speech that closed a challenging 2025 while opening the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic with a powerful historical balance sheet filled with triumphs, painful memories, and urgent warnings for the future.

Welcome to Commenta La Notizia.

Mattarella began with heartbreaking thoughts for current war victims, from homes destroyed in Ukrainian cities to bombed power plants leaving children, women, and elderly freezing in winter, to Gaza's tragic devastation where newborns die from hypothermia. He explained that the desire for peace grows daily but remains incomprehensible when rejected by those who feel strong enough to deny it, stressing that peace starts with a mindset, learning to live together respecting others without imposing one's will. With great affection, he quoted Pope Leo X, urging everyone to embrace the pontiff's call to reject hate, violence, and opposition, to practice dialogue, and above all to "disarm words" in an era dominated by vicious verbal clashes.

Mattarella then guided the audience through a moving imaginary family album of the Republic's 80 years, starting with women's suffrage in 1946 that imprinted an indelible democratic character on the new Italy, through the Constituent Assembly that despite heated political debates found high synthesis, drafting our Constitution's fundamentals in the afternoons while debating government urgencies in the mornings. He recalled the 1957 Rome Treaties with Italy as a protagonist in modern Europe's birth, reconstruction pillars like the Marshall Plan and transatlantic relations, land reform returning land to peasants, the Housing Plan for young families, the economic miracle filling factories with workers and building the nation's great infrastructure. He celebrated the Workers' Statute guaranteeing rights, dignity, and workplace safety, the National Health Service ensuring universal and free care, the extended pension system as pillars of the social state placing human dignity at the center.

The President did not avoid the darkest pages, remembering terrorism massacres that marked the Republic's night, overcome by solid institutional unity, and the names of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, eternal symbols of the fight against mafia that continue inspiring new generations. He evoked the 1960 Rome Olympics, first in the world to introduce paralympic participation, and the upcoming Milano Cortina 2026 as a remarkable opportunity to promote peace, friendship, and inclusion values, as well as a powerful antidote against youth violence and addictions. He acknowledged RAI's fundamental role as pluralist public service and Italy's cultural heritage, from art to cinema to music, that forged national identity, without forgetting Italian military contributions to world peacekeeping missions, starting from the 1961 Kindu aviators' sacrifice in Congo.

Mattarella drew a proud balance of a nation transformed from low education levels and mass emigration to one of the world's leading manufacturing and exporting powers, admired globally for lifestyles, territorial beauty, artistic treasures, and UNESCO-listed food and wine culture. But his tone grew concerning when denouncing cracks threatening this precious social cohesion: old and new poverty, growing inequalities, corruption, tax evasion, environmental crimes risking to compromise the common good never definitively secured. To youth, often described as distrustful or angry, he delivered a vibrant appeal: don't resign, be demanding and courageous like the generation that 80 years ago slept in trenches then voted the Republic building modern Italy. In an increasingly globalized and interdependent world marked by economic, climate, technological challenges, pandemics, and fundamentalist terrorism, he forcefully reiterated no obstacle can surpass our democracy. The speech concluded with a warm "Happy 2026" before over 23 million Italians.
