Matt Damon and Ben Affleck won $1 million on Millionaire one year apart, with both victories supporting charity

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck: The Million-Dollar Coincidence

What are the odds that two of Hollywood’s most famous lifelong friends would win the same $1 million prize on the same television show — just one year apart?
That is exactly what happened to Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
In 2025, Damon teamed up with Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and reached the show’s top prize.
Twelve months later, Affleck did the same thing.
But the most interesting part is not simply that both actors won $1 million. The money was being played for charity, turning what could have been a celebrity game-show stunt into a much more meaningful story.
Damon’s Million-Dollar Moment

Matt Damon’s victory came on July 30, 2025, when he appeared on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? alongside Ken Jennings.
Jennings, one of the most recognizable champions in quiz-show history, was an obvious choice as Damon’s partner. Together, they managed to navigate the increasingly difficult questions until they reached the final stages of the game.
At the $500,000 level, the pair faced a question about a celebrity who had entered show business after taking part in a Steve Martin look-alike contest.
The possible answers included Dr. Oz, Jerry Springer, Bill Nye and Anthony Bourdain.
The correct answer was Bill Nye.
Damon and Jennings survived the question and moved on to the final challenge: one question separating them from the $1 million jackpot.
The Strange Word Worth $1 Million

The final question was deceptively difficult.
The contestants were asked which word described the sound produced by leaves moving in the wind.
The four choices were Apricity, Petrichor, Susurrus and Eudaemonia.
Jennings had a strong feeling that the answer was “Susurrus,” but even an experienced quiz champion could not afford to be careless with $1 million at stake.
The pair used the 50:50 lifeline, reducing the possibilities and leaving Susurrus and Petrichor.
They trusted their instincts.
They were right.
“Susurrus” refers to a soft, whispering or murmuring sound, making it a particularly fitting word for the gentle rustling of leaves.
With that answer, Damon and Jennings secured the $1 million prize.
A Million Dollars With a Purpose

There was, however, an important detail behind the victory.
The money was being played for Water.org, the nonprofit organization co-founded by Damon and Gary White.
Water.org works to expand access to safe water and sanitation, particularly for communities around the world that lack reliable access to these basic services.
That means the story was never simply about Matt Damon becoming richer by winning a television game.
The real significance was that a celebrity appearance on a quiz show could generate a substantial contribution to a cause closely connected to Damon’s philanthropic work.
And then, one year later, something remarkably similar happened.
Ben Affleck Gets His Turn

In July 2026, Ben Affleck appeared on the new celebrity season of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
This time, his partner was Jamie Ding, a Jeopardy! champion.
Their game was broadcast in two parts, with the second part airing on July 29, 2026.
The format paired celebrities with experienced quiz contestants, with the teams competing for up to $1 million for a charity selected by the participants.
Affleck and Ding managed to survive the increasingly difficult questions and eventually found themselves facing the final question.
And this time, the subject was considerably more unusual.
The $1 Million Turkey Question

The final question concerned one of the strangest traditions associated with the American presidency: the annual Thanksgiving turkey pardon.
Affleck and Ding had to identify which pair of turkey names had never belonged to birds officially pardoned by a U.S. president.
The options were:
Peanut Butter & Jelly.
Tater & Tot.
Mac & Cheese.
Spaghetti & Meatball.
Neither Affleck nor Ding was completely confident.
They turned to host Jimmy Kimmel for help.
Kimmel selected “Spaghetti & Meatball” as his best guess, although he openly admitted that he was not certain.
The tension increased when Affleck and Ding also used the Phone-a-Friend lifeline.
Even then, they did not receive an answer that completely eliminated their doubts.
Eventually, they decided to trust Kimmel.
The answer was correct.
Spaghetti & Meatball had never been the name of a presidentially pardoned turkey pair.
Once again, the top prize was $1 million.
Another Million-Dollar Prize for Charity

Just as with Damon’s victory, the money was not simply a personal payday for the Hollywood star.
Affleck was playing for the Eastern Congo Initiative, the nonprofit organization he co-founded with Whitney Williams in 2010.
The organization supports locally led initiatives and communities in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
That created a striking parallel with Damon’s appearance the year before.
Different celebrity.
Different quiz champion.
Different charity.
Different final question.
But exactly the same result.
One million dollars for a cause.
The Damon-Affleck Connection Makes It Even Stranger

The coincidence would already be unusual if the two men were simply Hollywood colleagues.
They are not.
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have been friends since childhood.
They grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and eventually became writing partners. Their breakthrough came with Good Will Hunting, the 1997 film they wrote together.
The screenplay transformed their careers and earned them the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Their professional relationship continued through the years, with the two actors appearing in and producing various projects together.
In 2022, they took their collaboration even further by launching Artists Equity, a production company designed around a more artist-focused approach to filmmaking.
Affleck became CEO, while Damon took the role of Chief Content Officer.
So when Affleck appeared on Millionaire one year after Damon had won the jackpot, the connection was almost impossible for fans to ignore.
Coincidence or Something More?

There is no evidence that Affleck participated in the show specifically to recreate Damon’s achievement.
That distinction matters.
The two appearances involved different partners, different charitable organizations and different questions.
There is no reason to assume that the 2026 appearance was deliberately designed as a sequel to Damon’s 2025 victory.
And yet, the similarities are remarkable.
Damon.
Affleck.
The same game show.
The same $1 million top prize.
Two consecutive years.
Two longtime friends.
And both times, the money went toward charitable causes.
It sounds almost too perfectly written for Hollywood.
The Questions Could Not Have Been More Different

Perhaps the funniest part of the story is how different the two final questions were.
Damon’s fate depended on knowing an obscure English word describing a subtle natural sound.
Affleck’s fate depended on remembering the names of presidentially pardoned turkeys.
One final question sounded like a vocabulary test.
The other sounded like something from an American Thanksgiving trivia night.
Yet both produced the same dramatic conclusion.
The contestants made their decision.
The answer was revealed.
The million-dollar prize was secured.
And the money went to charity.
More Than a Celebrity Game Show

Celebrity game shows are often designed to create entertaining television.
Famous faces, difficult questions and dramatic decisions naturally make good viewing.
But the Damon and Affleck stories demonstrate how much more interesting the format becomes when the prize has a charitable destination.
For Damon, the appearance highlighted a cause he has supported for years through Water.org.
For Affleck, the victory brought attention to the work of the Eastern Congo Initiative.
The television audience gets the suspense of the game, while the eventual beneficiary gets something much more tangible.
That changes the meaning of the million-dollar moment.
Two Friends, Two Victories, One Unforgettable Coincidence

Hollywood is full of strange coincidences, but this one is particularly difficult to ignore.
Matt Damon won $1 million in 2025.
Ben Affleck won $1 million in 2026.
Both appeared on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
Both played alongside experienced quiz champions.
Both reached the final question.
And both victories were connected to charitable organizations.
Their friendship makes the story even more remarkable, especially considering how far back their relationship goes.
Maybe there is no deeper explanation.
Maybe it really is just an extraordinary coincidence.
But if Hollywood were writing the script, it would be hard to create a cleaner ending.
Two lifelong friends.
Two million-dollar victories.
Two very different questions.
And, most importantly, two prizes turned into something bigger than television entertainment.
What Would You Have Done?

DUE MILIONI PER BENEFICENZA Foto 6.png

Now comes the question that makes both victories fun to imagine.
Would you have known “Susurrus”?
Or would the turkey question have been easier?
And if you were sitting beside Ben Affleck with $1 million on the line, would you have trusted Jimmy Kimmel’s guess — even after admitting that he was not completely sure?
Perhaps that is the real appeal of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
At the final question, knowledge matters.
But sometimes, confidence, teamwork and the courage to trust an uncertain answer matter just as much.
For Damon and Affleck, those decisions produced an extraordinary coincidence.
And for two charitable causes, they produced something much more valuable than a memorable television moment.
