Few situations create more uncertainty inside a football club than a player suddenly disappearing during preseason.
That is exactly what has happened at Italian Serie A side Lecce, where Zambian international Lameck Banda has become the center of one of the most discussed stories of the summer transfer window.
After recently extending his contract until June 2027, Banda unexpectedly failed to report for preseason training. According to the club, the player initially mentioned travel and bureaucratic issues that allegedly prevented him from returning to Italy. Days later, however, communication reportedly stopped, leaving Lecce officials increasingly frustrated.
Sporting director Stefano Trinchera publicly confirmed that the club had received no further updates from the winger despite repeated attempts to contact him. His comments suggested that disciplinary measures may follow if the situation remains unresolved.
The timing could hardly be worse.
New head coach Eusebio Di Francesco is trying to build his squad ahead of the new Serie A season, and Banda was expected to play an important role thanks to his pace and ability to attack defenders one-on-one.
Instead, Lecce suddenly faces uncertainty both on and off the pitch.

A contract still running
Unlike many transfer disputes, Banda remains legally tied to Lecce through 2027.
That means the player is still expected to respect the contractual obligations agreed with the Italian club, including attending training sessions and preseason activities unless justified circumstances prevent him from doing so.
Whether his absence can ultimately be justified remains unclear.

Transfer rumors grow
As often happens in football, silence creates speculation.
Several reports have linked Banda with potential interest from clubs outside Italy, including teams from Saudi Arabia and Turkey. At the time of writing, however, no official negotiations have been confirmed.

Many supporters feel disappointed, believing the club had shown confidence in Banda despite previous injury problems.

Several scenarios remain possible.
Banda could eventually return to Italy and resume training.
The club could decide to negotiate a transfer if suitable offers arrive.
Or the relationship could deteriorate further, leading to disciplinary action and a difficult legal or contractual dispute.
For now, uncertainty remains the biggest winner.
Both Lecce and its supporters are waiting for answers that, so far, have not arrived.
