Juventus Fight Back in Vigo as Milan Shine 4-0: Cissé Steals the European Spotlight

Juventus complete a late 2-1 comeback at Celta Vigo, while Milan beat Salzburg 4-0 thanks to Alphadjo Cissé’s hat-trick.

European football offered Italian fans a much-needed change of mood on October 15. Juventus came from behind to defeat Celta Vigo 2-1 in Spain, while AC Milan produced a commanding 4-0 victory away to Salzburg, powered by a remarkable hat-trick from 19-year-old Alphadjo Cissé. The two results could hardly have arrived in more different ways: Juventus had to dig deep, correct a difficult first half and find a winner in stoppage time; Milan were more ruthless in front of goal and turned a European away match into a statement performance.
The timing matters. Italian teams had endured a painful round in the Champions League, with Inter, Napoli, Como and Roma all losing in the second matchday. That does not mean Italian football has suddenly become strong in one competition and weak in another, but it does make the Europa League results particularly welcome. Juventus and Milan have given their supporters something to build on, although both still have questions to answer.

Juventus 2-1 Celta Vigo: a comeback sealed in stoppage time

Juventus left Vigo with three points, but the scoreline tells only part of the story. The team did not dominate the match from the start, and for a significant stretch it looked as though Celta Vigo had found a way to frustrate Luciano Spalletti’s side.
The hosts took the lead in the 18th minute through Hugo Álvarez. Celta worked the ball into a dangerous area and Álvarez finished from close range, punishing a Juventus defence that had not managed to shut down the move. The goal gave the Spanish side a platform, and Juventus struggled to establish the tempo it wanted. Too often, the visitors circulated the ball slowly enough for Celta to recover its shape.
That first half left Spalletti with plenty to consider. Juventus had some promising moments, but possession did not consistently turn into pressure. The midfield and attack were not always connected, while the team’s defensive structure occasionally opened spaces that Celta could exploit. The Italian side needed a sharper second half if it was to avoid dropping points.
The equaliser came in the 58th minute. Nick Woltemade reacted quickly after Marcos Alonso failed to control the ball cleanly inside the area. The Juventus forward took advantage of the loose ball and finished to make it 1-1. It was not a goal built from a long spell of overwhelming pressure; it was a reminder that strikers can change games by reading a situation a fraction of a second faster than their opponents.
The match became more open after the equaliser. Juventus looked more determined to push forward, but Celta remained dangerous and the visitors were not entirely secure at the back. There were moments when the teams seemed separated more by individual decisions than by any clear tactical control.
As the clock moved towards full time, a draw appeared increasingly likely. Nico González came close to giving Juventus the lead late on, sending a left-footed effort just wide. Then, in the 92nd minute, Andrea Cambiaso delivered the decisive ball. Randal Kolo Muani attacked the space inside the penalty area and headed home to complete the comeback.
The 2-1 result gave Juventus a second win from two Europa League matches. It also demonstrated something important about the team’s mentality: even when the performance is uneven, the players can keep looking for a way to win. Still, a late winner should not disguise the work that remains to be done.

Woltemade and Kolo Muani provide the decisive edge

The two goals came from different kinds of attacking contribution. Woltemade was alert enough to turn a defensive mistake into an equaliser, while Kolo Muani brought a more direct presence after coming off the bench. His late header was the sort of penalty-area action that can decide European away matches: the delivery was accurate, the movement was well timed and the finish left little time for the goalkeeper to react.
Cambiaso deserves credit for the cross, too. In a tight match, the quality of the final delivery can be just as important as the finish itself. Juventus needed someone to make the difference when the game was almost over, and the combination between Cambiaso and Kolo Muani supplied exactly that.
There are limits to what can be inferred from one result. Juventus showed resilience, but its first-half performance was not convincing enough to suggest that all the structural issues have disappeared. Against more clinical opponents, slow transitions and gaps between the lines could become costly. The result is a positive step, not proof that the team has already reached its ideal level.

Spalletti welcomes the win but sees room for improvement

Spalletti was pleased with the willingness to keep pushing for a victory, but he did not present the performance as flawless. After the match, he said Juventus had been too slow in the first half and had repeatedly allowed Celta time to reorganise. He also acknowledged that his team had become disjointed at certain moments and had left space for the opposition.
His comments were revealing because they focused on the difference between taking risks and losing balance. Modern football often demands forward movement and aggressive decisions, but those choices need to be supported by enough structure to prevent the team from being exposed. Juventus found the winning goal because it continued to attack; it also gave Celta opportunities because that approach was not always controlled.
Spalletti also addressed Teun Koopmeiners’ performance, suggesting that the midfielder was not playing with the necessary calm and needed to improve. He discussed Francisco Conceição’s visible frustration after being substituted, saying he suspected the winger was disappointed with his own display. The coach’s message was that individual reactions would be addressed internally, rather than allowed to overshadow the result.
That balance between satisfaction and criticism may be useful for Juventus. Winning away in Europe matters, especially after a difficult opening period, but the next step is to produce a more complete performance over 90 minutes.

The table: Juventus start the second matchday on top

Two wins from two matches put Juventus on six points, with seven goals scored and only one conceded. In the standings provided after matchday two, that record places the Italian side first, ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, who also have six points but a slightly lower goal difference.
The league phase is still in its early stages. Each club plays eight matches, and the final position depends on consistency across the entire schedule. A perfect start is valuable, but it does not guarantee qualification or an easy route through the next stage. Juventus will need to keep collecting points while improving the quality of its performances.
The next Europa League test comes against Rennes on October 22. It will be a useful opportunity to find out whether the late win in Vigo can become the beginning of a more stable run, rather than an isolated escape.

Salzburg 0-4 Milan: Cissé delivers a night to remember

Milan’s performance in Austria was more emphatic. The Rossoneri defeated Salzburg 4-0 and gave themselves a major lift after losing their opening match against Benfica. The headline belongs to Alphadjo Cissé, the 19-year-old forward who scored three times and became the standout story of the evening.
Cissé’s hat-trick was not simply a nice personal milestone. It helped Milan secure an away victory with a clear margin and offered a reminder of how much a young player can change the mood around a team. According to reports after the match, Cissé became the youngest Italian to score a hat-trick in European club competition. Milan also recorded its first hat-trick in a continental competition since Filippo Inzaghi achieved the feat in 2002.
Records always depend on the precise competition and statistical criteria being used, but the broader point is undeniable: this was a remarkable European night for a teenager still establishing himself. Cissé took his opportunity, finished with confidence and gave Milan a focal point in a match that the Italian side ultimately controlled.
The result was especially useful because Milan had started the campaign with a defeat against Benfica. A second loss would have left the Rossoneri under pressure early in the league phase. Instead, they responded with four goals, a clean sheet and a performance that should improve confidence ahead of the next round.

A red card, but no late collapse

Milan’s evening was not entirely without complications. Filippo Terracciano was sent off in the 83rd minute, leaving the visitors with ten men for the closing stages. By then, however, the scoreline had already been shaped by Milan’s attacking efficiency, and the dismissal did not change the outcome.
The red card is worth mentioning because a 4-0 win can make a match look completely straightforward in retrospect. Milan still had to manage the closing minutes with fewer players, and future matches may be less forgiving if defensive lapses or disciplinary problems occur earlier. The clean sheet and the margin of victory are encouraging, but they should not erase every detail of the performance.
After two matches, Milan have three points and a goal difference of plus two. That is a solid recovery, although the Rossoneri still have work to do if they want to climb the standings and avoid turning the remaining fixtures into a race for points.

Why Cissé’s breakthrough matters

A hat-trick at 19 naturally creates excitement. Cissé has earned the attention by producing a decisive performance on a European stage, and his finishing gives Milan another attacking option to consider. But one outstanding night should be treated as the beginning of a story, not its conclusion.
Young players need time to establish consistency, adapt to different tactical demands and cope with opponents who will study their strengths more closely after a breakthrough. The challenge now is to repeat the quality of the performance, remain composed when opportunities are fewer and continue developing within the team.
For Milan, the value of Cissé’s night goes beyond the three goals. It shows that the squad may have another player capable of making a significant contribution, while offering supporters a fresh reason to follow the team’s European campaign.

The other results: Leverkusen, Benfica and Lyon impress

The second matchday produced several striking results. Bayer Leverkusen beat Lech Poznań 4-0, Benfica defeated Celtic 4-1, and Lyon edged Crystal Palace 3-2 in one of the most entertaining games of the round. Bournemouth also secured a 3-0 win over Sturm Graz, while Sunderland won 2-1 away to Torreense.
Beşiktaş beat Hoffenheim 3-2, Olympiacos won 1-0 at Marseille, and Ferencváros defeated Viktoria Plzeň 2-1. Dinamo Zagreb recorded a 1-0 victory over Anderlecht, while Rennes beat OFI Crete 2-1. AZ Alkmaar won 2-1 against Hapoel Beer-Sheva, and Omonia took a 3-0 win away to Celje.
There were also three draws: Union Saint-Gilloise and Real Sociedad finished 1-1, Sparta Prague drew 1-1 with Lillestrøm, and NEC Nijmegen shared the points with Levski Sofia. Jagiellonia defeated Ararat-Armenia 3-1.
The spread of results illustrates how open the competition remains. With 36 teams in the league phase and eight matches for each club, a good start can create momentum, but no team can afford to relax. Goal difference, away results and the ability to recover after setbacks may all prove important when the table begins to separate.

A different picture from the Champions League

The contrast with the Champions League was difficult to ignore. In the second round of that competition, Inter lost 4-3 to Club Brugge, Napoli were beaten 3-1 by Villarreal, Como lost 3-2 at Feyenoord and Roma fell 4-3 to Real Madrid. Those results raised questions about defensive organisation and the ability of Italian teams to manage high-intensity European matches.
Juventus and Milan offered a more positive picture in the Europa League, but the distinction should not be exaggerated. The competitions involve different opponents, tactical contexts and stages of team development. Two matchdays are not enough to declare one Italian side successful and another a failure for the entire season.
What can be said is that the Europa League gave Italian football a welcome boost. Juventus showed determination and found a way to win despite an uneven performance. Milan were more ruthless, and Cissé’s hat-trick gave the result a memorable individual story. The challenge is to turn these results into a pattern rather than a one-night exception.

What comes next for Juventus and Milan?

Juventus have the stronger position in the early standings, with six points from six available. Their next task is to improve the rhythm of their play and reduce the periods in which opponents can dictate the tempo. If the team can combine the resilience shown in Vigo with greater control, it will be better placed to sustain its European campaign.
Milan, meanwhile, need to build on the Salzburg performance and show that the attacking sharpness can survive against different kinds of opponents. Cissé has put himself in the spotlight, but the team cannot depend on a single player to carry every match. The next fixtures will test the depth of the squad, its defensive discipline and its ability to create chances when space is limited.
The main takeaway from this Europa League night is simple: Juventus found a way to win when the match was slipping away, while Milan turned a difficult European assignment into a commanding result. One victory was a comeback; the other was a statement. Both are valuable, and both now need to be followed by consistency.
