Flydubai Flight FZ1073: The Suspected Hijacking Attempt and What Really Happened

Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia after a cockpit attack.

A routine flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into one of the most frightening aviation incidents of 2026 when violence erupted inside the cockpit at cruising altitude.
Flydubai flight FZ1073 was carrying 174 people when the captain was attacked by his co-pilot during the journey toward Israel. The aircraft suddenly lost thousands of metres of altitude, an emergency situation developed inside the flight deck and passengers and crew members eventually intervened.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. The passengers later continued their journey to Israel on a replacement aircraft.
The incident has since raised questions about aviation security, cockpit access, the background of the suspected attacker and, above all, his motive.
But there is one distinction that needs to remain clear.
Although Israeli officials have described the episode as an apparent attempt to crash the aircraft and have raised the possibility of terrorism, the United Arab Emirates has opened a formal investigation that is still examining exactly what happened, why it happened and whether there was any terrorist connection or prior planning.
In other words, the attack inside the cockpit is established. The full motive is not.

A normal flight turns into an emergency

Flight FZ1073 departed Dubai International Airport at approximately 7:05 a.m. local time on September 30, heading toward Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv.
The flight initially followed a normal route.
Then something happened inside the cockpit.
According to the reconstruction provided by Israeli authorities and international media, the co-pilot attacked the captain. The precise sequence of the confrontation is still being examined, but the consequences were immediately visible in the aircraft's flight path.
The plane began a dramatic descent while the crew struggled to regain control.
Passengers later described a sudden and terrifying change in the aircraft's movement. What had been an ordinary commercial flight became an emergency in which the cockpit itself had become the centre of the crisis.
Flydubai initially described the event carefully, confirming that an altercation had taken place in the flight deck and that the crew had managed to secure the aircraft.
That wording matters because it avoids drawing conclusions about the attacker's intentions before investigators have completed their work.

The Boeing loses thousands of metres

Flight-tracking data provided one of the clearest indications of how serious the situation became.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was flying at roughly 33,000 feet before the aircraft descended rapidly to around 17,000 feet during the critical phase of the incident.
The loss of altitude was approximately 14,000 feet, or more than 4,000 metres.
For passengers inside the aircraft, this was not simply a routine descent.
The aircraft was experiencing an extremely unstable situation while an altercation was taking place in the cockpit. Witness accounts describe people rushing toward the front of the cabin as the danger became apparent.
The situation could have developed into a much larger disaster.
Instead, several different actions combined to prevent that outcome.

The wounded captain opens the cockpit door

One of the most important moments came when the injured captain managed to activate the cockpit-door release mechanism.
Despite being seriously wounded, Captain Smit Machchhar was able to open the door.
That allowed passengers and crew members to enter the flight deck and confront the attacker.
Several passengers helped restrain the co-pilot. At the same time, two off-duty pilots who were travelling on the aircraft were able to assist with the emergency and help restore control of the Boeing.
This sequence is crucial because modern commercial aircraft are deliberately designed to keep the cockpit separated from the passenger cabin.
The cockpit door is one of the most important security barriers in civil aviation.
In this case, however, the wounded captain's ability to open it appears to have been decisive in allowing other people to intervene.

The passengers who entered the cockpit

Among those who became directly involved were several Israeli passengers.
Yaniv Hayun later described rushing toward the cockpit and helping remove the attacker from the controls. Other passengers also entered the flight deck and helped restrain the co-pilot.
A doctor travelling on the aircraft, Shota Musayev, also assisted the injured captain.
Their actions have since received significant attention in Israel.
President Isaac Herzog announced that four Israeli passengers — Yaniv Hayun, Tzvika Manes, Asaf Rajuan and Dr Shota Musayev — would be recommended for the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism.
The recognition reflects the fact that they intervened during an extremely dangerous situation, when the aircraft was still unstable and the attacker had not yet been fully restrained.
Their intervention was only one part of the response, however.
The injured captain, cabin crew and the off-duty pilots aboard the flight also played important roles.

The emergency landing in Tabuk

Once the aircraft had been stabilised, it became clear that continuing to Tel Aviv was not a realistic option.
The flight diverted toward Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
The Boeing eventually landed safely at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport.
The decision created an unusual diplomatic and logistical situation. The aircraft was travelling from the United Arab Emirates to Israel, while the emergency landing took place in Saudi Arabia.
After the landing, the passengers remained in Saudi Arabia for several hours before a replacement Flydubai aircraft transported them onward to Israel.
More than ten hours after the original emergency, the passengers arrived at Ben Gurion Airport.
For many of them, the experience was still difficult to process.
What had begun as an ordinary flight had turned into an event that could have ended very differently.

Captain Smit Machchhar becomes a central figure

The injured commander, Smit Machchhar, quickly became one of the most recognised figures in the story.
Machchhar is an Indian national and an experienced commercial pilot. After the attack, he was treated in Saudi Arabia and was reported to be in stable condition.
The available reconstruction indicates that his actions were critical during the emergency.
Despite his injuries, he remained capable of helping create the conditions that allowed the cockpit door to be opened and other people to enter.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly praised the captain.
The emphasis on his actions also reflects a wider point about aviation emergencies: procedures and technology matter, but human decisions during the first seconds of a crisis can be equally decisive.

Was this actually an attempted hijacking?

This is the most difficult question surrounding the FZ1073 incident.
Several Israeli officials have described the episode as an apparent attempt to crash the aircraft.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz characterised the incident as a terrorist attack, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the co-pilot appeared to have attempted to bring down the plane.
However, the investigation has not yet produced a final public conclusion establishing the attack as terrorism.
The UAE Attorney-General has ordered a specialised investigation to establish the facts, circumstances and motives of the incident. Investigators have specifically been instructed to examine whether there was any connection to terrorist activity, whether the attack had been planned in advance and whether there was any external direction.
That is why the safest description at this stage is an apparent attempted hijacking or attempted crash, under investigation.
Calling it a confirmed terrorist attack would go beyond the evidence publicly established as of October 1.

What about the alleged radicalisation?

Another major element comes from Netanyahu's statements.
The Israeli prime minister said that the co-pilot had undergone Islamist radicalisation and that investigators were examining information from his personal background.
Reuters reported those comments but also noted that Israeli officials were still investigating and that no final motive had been established.
The distinction is important.
A political leader's assessment is not the same thing as the final conclusion of a criminal investigation.
The UAE authorities have not publicly confirmed the full theory put forward by Israeli officials. They have instead asked the public to avoid speculation while investigators gather and verify evidence.
The suspect's nationality has also been described by Israeli authorities as Omani, but Omani authorities have not publicly provided a complete account of the case.

Is Iran involved?

The possibility of an Iranian connection has also appeared in the reporting, but there is currently no public evidence establishing such a link.
Netanyahu himself said it was too early to determine whether Iran had played any role.
Reuters reported that Israeli security officials had not identified Iranian involvement at that stage.
That makes this another area where caution is necessary.
The incident occurred in a region where aviation security and geopolitical tensions are already unusually sensitive. But geographical context alone cannot establish responsibility.
Investigators will have to determine whether the co-pilot acted alone, whether he had a specific ideological motivation and whether anyone else was involved.
Until that evidence becomes public, the Iranian hypothesis remains just that: a hypothesis.

Why the UAE investigation matters

The formal UAE investigation is particularly important because the aircraft is registered in the United Arab Emirates.
The UAE Attorney-General has established a specialised investigative team working with the General Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant authorities.
Its mandate goes beyond determining how the aircraft was diverted.
Investigators are expected to establish the circumstances of the cockpit confrontation, the motives of those involved and whether there was any prior planning or outside direction.
They will also have to reconstruct the security chain surrounding the flight.
That includes the background of the co-pilot, his professional history, his access to the cockpit, the events immediately preceding the attack and the exact sequence that led to the loss of altitude.
The investigation could therefore become important not only for the criminal case but also for aviation-security procedures.

The cockpit door is now part of the story

The incident has inevitably revived attention on one of the most protected areas of a commercial aircraft: the cockpit.
Following the September 11 attacks, cockpit doors and access procedures became significantly more restrictive around the world.
The basic principle is straightforward: passengers should not be able to enter the flight deck without authorisation.
But aviation regulations also contain emergency procedures designed for situations in which the pilots are incapacitated and someone needs to reach the cockpit.
In the Flydubai case, the captain's ability to release the door was reportedly crucial.
That raises a broader security question.
What happens if the threat does not come from a passenger trying to enter the cockpit, but from one of the people already inside it?
That question is likely to receive attention during the investigation.

Flydubai suspends Israel flights

The consequences were not limited to flight FZ1073.
Flydubai suspended flights to and from Israel while the investigation continues.
The airline said the temporary measure was taken in coordination with the relevant authorities and would remain in place while the facts were being established.
The decision shows that the incident has been treated as a serious aviation-security matter even before the final motive has been established.
For passengers, it also means that the consequences of the incident extend beyond the original flight.
Airlines and regulators now have to consider whether additional screening or operational measures are required for crews travelling to Israel.

A dramatic chain of decisions

The most striking aspect of the FZ1073 story is how many separate actions were necessary to prevent a catastrophe.
The captain had to survive the attack and retain enough control to open the cockpit door.
Passengers had to understand what was happening and decide to intervene.
The attacker had to be restrained.
Other pilots on board had to assist with the aircraft.
The crew then had to divert the aircraft to a suitable airport.
And the Saudi authorities had to handle the emergency landing at Tabuk.
None of these individual steps alone explains why the aircraft survived.
Together, they prevented a potentially catastrophic outcome.

What remains unknown

The most important unanswered question is still the motive.
Investigators have to determine whether the attack was personal, ideological, planned, spontaneous or connected to another organisation.
They also have to establish exactly what happened inside the cockpit and whether the aircraft was deliberately placed into the dangerous descent.
There are already several competing narratives.
Israeli officials have described an apparent attempt to crash the aircraft and raised terrorism concerns. The UAE has opened an investigation without publicly endorsing a final explanation. Flydubai has stressed the incident and the safe outcome while warning against premature speculation.
These positions can coexist because the investigation is still in its early stages.

A flight that came dangerously close to disaster

The story of FZ1073 is therefore not yet a finished terrorism case.
It is a documented aviation-security emergency involving a violent cockpit confrontation, a wounded captain, a rapid loss of altitude, passengers who intervened, additional pilots who helped regain control and an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
The investigation will determine what motivated the attacker and whether the incident was part of a broader plan.
For now, the clearest conclusion is also the simplest one.
The flight survived because several people reacted at exactly the moment when there was almost no margin for error.
The final answers — especially about motive, radicalisation and any possible outside involvement — will have to come from evidence rather than speculation.
