Italy’s 2-0 defeat to Belgium at the Stadio Olimpico had already been a difficult night for Roberto Mancini and his players. Then, in the final moments, the match produced another story. Gianluigi Donnarumma and Romelu Lukaku became involved in a heated confrontation after the Belgian striker appeared to mock Italy’s defeat by signalling the score and making a “silence” gesture.
The incident quickly spread across social media and dominated much of the post-match discussion. It was also not an isolated chapter in the history between the two players. A similar gesture had already appeared during Belgium’s quarter-final defeat against Italy at Euro 2020 in 2021, when Lukaku celebrated his penalty by putting a finger to his lips.

How the confrontation started

Lukaku came on in the 84th minute, replacing Charles De Ketelaere. Belgium was already leading 2-0 after goals from Mika Godts and Dodi Lukébakio, while the Italian crowd had been booing the Belgian forward.
Near the end of the match, Lukaku turned toward the Italian side and made a gesture showing the number two with his fingers. He also put a finger to his lips, apparently telling the crowd to be quiet.
The gesture was visible and has been widely described by Italian media as a deliberate provocation. What cannot be established with the same certainty is exactly what Lukaku said during those moments.
Several reports attributed words along the lines of “you conceded two” to the Belgian, but the precise conversation cannot be treated as an official transcript.
Donnarumma reacted by moving toward Lukaku after the final whistle. The two came face to face and exchanged words before teammates and referee Daniel Siebert intervened.

The referee’s response

Siebert's decision was straightforward. Donnarumma and Lukaku were both shown yellow cards in the 93rd minute.
Daniel Maldini had already received a yellow card at the 91st minute after becoming involved in the attempt to contain Lukaku during the confrontation.
No player was sent off.
That distinction matters. The incident looked dramatic, but the disciplinary outcome remained limited to cautions. Donnarumma was therefore not automatically suspended for Italy’s next Nations League match in Türkiye.
UEFA’s competition regulations provide for suspension after the accumulation of the required number of yellow cards during the league phase, while a straight red card carries different consequences.

Why the 2021 incident matters

The strongest reason this confrontation attracted so much attention is the history between the two players.
In 2021, during the Euro quarter-final between Belgium and Italy, Lukaku faced Donnarumma from the penalty spot after Italy had taken a two-goal lead. He scored the penalty and used the same finger-to-the-lips gesture.
Italy eventually won 2-1 and reached the semi-finals.
Five years later, the gesture appeared again, this time after Belgium had defeated Italy 2-0 in Rome.
The similarity is obvious, but it should not automatically be interpreted as proof of a deep personal feud. Football creates long memories, especially when two players have repeatedly met in high-pressure matches.

Rivalry rather than jealousy

One of the questions surrounding the incident is whether something more personal lies behind it.
There is currently no reliable evidence to describe jealousy as the cause.
What can be documented is a history of competitive encounters. Donnarumma and Lukaku also faced each other repeatedly during the Milan derby years, when the Italian goalkeeper was with AC Milan and Lukaku was one of Inter’s main attacking players.
That history provides plenty of context for an intense reaction without requiring speculation about private motives.
The simplest explanation is also the most supportable one: competitive tension, an emotional match, a provocative gesture and a player reacting to it.

Where sport ends and provocation begins

Football has always contained psychological battles. Players celebrate, supporters whistle, opponents exchange gestures and words, and sometimes emotions get very close to the limit.
The problem comes when provocation becomes more important than the game itself.
Lukaku had every reason to celebrate Belgium’s victory. At the same time, directing a gesture of silence toward a hostile crowd after being booed was bound to produce a reaction.
Donnarumma, as Italy’s captain, was also responsible for keeping control. Instead of ignoring the gesture, he confronted Lukaku.
The referee therefore treated the episode through the behaviour he could actually sanction: both players received yellow cards.
It was not the referee’s job to decide who had the better reason to be angry.

The strange ending to an already difficult night

The confrontation became almost symbolic because of what had happened before it.
Italy had lost 2-0 at home. Belgium had been the stronger team for much of the first half, and although Italy improved after the interval, Lukébakio’s second goal stopped the Azzurri’s best spell.
Donnarumma had also been one of Italy’s most important players during the difficult periods of the match.
The final whistle therefore arrived with frustration already high.
Lukaku’s gesture added another spark.
Donnarumma’s response added another.
The referee and the players around them made sure the situation did not become a physical fight.

What happens next?

There is no immediate suspension for Donnarumma as a result of this yellow card alone. That means the Italian captain remains available for the next Nations League match against Türkiye in Bursa.
For Lukaku, the same basic point applies: he was cautioned rather than sent off.
Any additional disciplinary decision would have to come from the competent UEFA bodies and should not be assumed in advance.
The more immediate consequence is therefore emotional rather than sporting.
Italy has to travel to Türkiye only three days after the defeat against Belgium. Mancini needs his players focused on the competition rather than on the confrontation that happened at the end of the previous game.

And there will be another Italy-Belgium match

The story may not end in Rome.
Italy and Belgium are scheduled to meet again in the Nations League group phase on November 15.
That means Donnarumma and Lukaku could have another opportunity to face each other before the competition is over.
Whether the atmosphere will be calmer is impossible to know.
What is certain is that the 2021 gesture, the 2026 confrontation and the history of their meetings have now become part of the background to the next encounter.

The important part is what happened on the pitch

The Donnarumma-Lukaku confrontation was dramatic and understandably attracted enormous attention. But it should not completely replace the football story.
Italy lost 2-0.
Belgium won.
Godts and Lukébakio scored.
The Azzurri need points against Türkiye and France.
And Mancini has to rebuild a team that is still searching for consistency.
The argument at the end was memorable, but it was not what decided the match.
It was the final expression of the frustration surrounding it.
For Italy, the real response has to come in the next ninety minutes.
