Colombia woke up on August 10 to a violent reminder of how unpredictable the Earth can be.
At 7:34 a.m. local time, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia, with its epicenter near San José del Palmar in the department of Chocó.
The Colombian Geological Service placed the hypocenter at roughly 103 kilometers deep and described the event as the strongest earthquake recorded in Colombia during the 21st century.
The depth is one of the most interesting parts of the story.
This was not a shallow earthquake, yet the shaking spread across a huge area. The combination of its magnitude and depth allowed seismic energy to travel far beyond the immediate epicentral zone.
And the human cost has continued to rise.
As of August 11, the latest available Colombian update reported at least 169 deaths and 1,246 injuries, although the figures remain provisional while rescue teams continue checking damaged areas.
Pereira, Cali and the Coffee Region
Some of the most serious damage has been reported in cities including Pereira, Cali, Manizales, Quibdó and Armenia.
Buildings collapsed. Infrastructure was damaged. Airport operations were disrupted.
Pereira became one of the major centers of the emergency, while images from the city showed the terrifying effect of the earthquake on transport infrastructure.
Passengers were caught in the middle of the shaking at an airport, while people inside a cable-car system experienced violent cabin movement during the earthquake.
For many survivors, the most frightening part came after the first shaking stopped.
A damaged building can remain dangerous for hours or days, especially when aftershocks continue.
Colombia Has Seen This Before
The 2026 earthquake is powerful, but Colombia's seismic history is much longer.
In 1979, the Tumaco earthquake reached about magnitude 8. It occurred along the Pacific subduction zone and generated a tsunami, causing severe coastal damage.
In 1983, Popayán was hit by a magnitude 5.6 earthquake. The number was dramatically lower than 7.4, but around 250 people died and thousands of structures were damaged.
Then came the 1999 Armenia earthquake, a magnitude 6.1 event that devastated Colombia's Coffee Region. Hundreds of people died in Armenia alone, and more than 21,000 homes were damaged or destroyed in the city.
These disasters reveal an important truth:
Magnitude alone does not determine how deadly an earthquake will be.
Depth, distance from populated areas, construction quality, soil conditions and the time of day can completely change the outcome.
The Venezuela Comparison
The Colombian earthquake also comes just weeks after a catastrophic seismic sequence in neighboring Venezuela.
On June 24, Venezuela experienced two major earthquakes within seconds of each other: magnitude 7.2 followed by magnitude 7.5.
The second event was slightly stronger than Colombia's 7.4 earthquake. But the difference between 7.4 and 7.5 is not enormous: because earthquake magnitude is logarithmic, the 7.5 event released roughly 40% more energy.
The consequences were dramatically different.
By early August, Reuters reported that the official Venezuelan death toll had reached 6,125, with nearly 61,000 people receiving hospital treatment.
That comparison is important because it demonstrates why earthquake magnitude should never be treated as a simple disaster score.
A stronger earthquake does not automatically mean more deaths.
The location of the rupture and the vulnerability of the population matter just as much.
Why Colombia Keeps Shaking
Colombia sits in a highly active tectonic environment.
Along the Pacific margin, the Nazca Plate is being forced beneath the South American Plate. The interaction between tectonic plates constantly generates seismic activity.
The Colombian Geological Service says the country records roughly 2,500 earthquakes every month, although most are too small for people to feel.
That does not mean Colombia is becoming more earthquake-prone today.
It means scientists are much better at detecting small events than they were decades ago.
Modern seismic networks can identify earthquakes within minutes, while smartphones and social media allow people to report what they experienced almost instantly.

What Happens Next?
The emergency is not over simply because the main earthquake has passed.
Rescue teams must continue searching damaged buildings. Engineers need to determine which structures are safe. Hospitals and transport networks have to recover, while thousands of people may need temporary housing.
Aftershocks are another concern.
The Colombian Geological Service recorded numerous aftershocks following the main event and warned that additional earthquakes could occur.
Scientists still cannot predict exactly when a major earthquake will happen.
That makes preparation crucial.
Colombia's latest disaster is therefore more than a story about one powerful earthquake.
It is a reminder of the country's seismic history, from Tumaco to Popayán and Armenia, and a warning that the consequences of an earthquake depend on much more than the number shown on a seismological screen.
The ground moves for seconds.
The consequences can last for years.
