Coca-Cola’s Sicilian partner is investing €51M in a high-tech automated logistics hub in Catania, with AI, robotics

Coca-Cola’s $51 Million Investment Is Bringing a New Industrial Era to Sicily

Catania is getting a glimpse of what the next generation of industrial logistics could look like.
Sibeg Coca-Cola, the company responsible for producing, bottling and distributing The Coca-Cola Company’s products across Sicily, is investing €51 million in a new automated logistics hub at its Catania facility.
The project is not simply about building a larger warehouse. It combines vertical storage, automation, artificial intelligence, renewable energy and digital control systems in a single industrial platform.
Construction began in February 2026. The facility is expected to be completed in July 2027, with full operations scheduled for November 2027.
The numbers are impressive: around 43,000 pallet positions and a direct connection with the existing production plant through an elevated tunnel.

A warehouse that works differently
Traditional warehouses depend heavily on forklifts, manual movement and large horizontal spaces.
Sibeg is taking a different approach.
The new structure will use vertical space to store products and materials while automated systems handle the movement of goods. Raw materials can be transferred toward production lines, while finished Coca-Cola products can move back into storage.
That creates a continuous logistical loop between manufacturing and warehousing.
Artificial intelligence will also play a role in monitoring the system and identifying anomalies. The goal is not simply to automate physical work, but to create a production environment where machines, software and employees can work together more efficiently.
Sibeg says the project will also create 24 new positions, adding to the workforce already employed at the Catania plant.
That detail is particularly interesting because automation does not necessarily mean fewer jobs. Instead, the skills required can change, creating demand for technicians, digital specialists, maintenance professionals and employees able to manage complex automated systems.

Why Catania matters
Sibeg has been part of Sicily’s industrial landscape since 1960.
The company expanded quickly. By 1970 it already had three production plants in Catania, Palermo and Syracuse, along with nine warehouses.
Over the decades, Catania became the central production hub.
Today Sibeg says it employs roughly 415 people, serves more than 30,000 points of sale across Sicily and has become one of the region’s most recognizable industrial companies.
The €51 million project therefore needs to be seen as part of a much longer investment story.
In 2023, Sibeg announced a €10 million financing package connected to green development, renewable energy and the expansion of production. In 2025, the company announced a further €15 million ESG financing package supporting the development of the automated vertical warehouse.
The new investment is the next step.

Solar power meets automation
The project also includes a major energy component.
The new facility is expected to feature 2.1 MWp of photovoltaic capacity and 2 MWh of battery storage.
That matters because highly automated industrial facilities require significant amounts of electricity. Producing part of that energy on-site can help reduce dependence on external supplies and improve overall energy management.
For Sibeg, the warehouse is therefore part of a broader strategy combining industrial efficiency and environmental goals.

What it could mean for Sicily
There is a bigger story behind the machines and the numbers.
Sicily has long struggled to retain industrial investment and highly skilled workers. A major private investment in a long-established manufacturing site therefore has significance beyond the company itself.
The immediate confirmed employment figure is 24 new positions.
The wider economic impact will be harder to measure until the new facility is fully operational. Construction, suppliers, maintenance, technology and professional services could all benefit from the project, but those effects should be evaluated once the investment is completed.
For now, the clearest message is that Sibeg is choosing to modernize its Sicilian base rather than simply maintain the status quo.
And that may be the most important part of the story.
Catania is not getting just another warehouse. It is getting an industrial facility designed around automation, AI, renewable energy and high-capacity logistics.
By late 2027, the real test will begin: whether this €51 million bet can make the Catania plant faster, more efficient and more competitive while keeping skilled industrial jobs in Sicily.
For a company that has been operating on the island since 1960, that would be more than a technological upgrade.
It would be another chapter in a very long Sicilian industrial story.

What do you think: can investments like this help Sicily build a stronger high-tech manufacturing future?
