BLURT: Are Contests Really Transparent? Two Different Models and Many Questions Still Unanswered

Are BLURT contests truly fair? Exploring transparency, repeated wins, witness accountability, and trust within the blockchain

Hello EVERYONE, especially my friends on BLURT!
As you may have noticed, my presence across different writing platforms has become increasingly consistent, and it will continue to grow through a variety of projects and initiatives.
My project, Commenta La Notizia (Comment on the News), was created with a specific goal: to SHARE information that, far too often, is mistakenly ignored or even underestimated on platforms of this kind. As a result, a segment of the user base that might be interested in informative content is left on the sidelines. In my opinion, these users could enrich such projects with new content while contributing to a higher level of critical thinking and intellectual development.
However, there is one fundamental condition for growth: a critical eye must NEVER be missing, and I repeat, NEVER. We need the courage to point out the flaws of the platform we happen to be part of.
Freedom of thought must never become a privilege granted only to those who agree with the majority.
We should never be afraid to express our opinions, even when doing so leads to changes in the votes we receive or when people who once appeared to appreciate us suddenly start attacking us for a few extra votes, to attract attention, or for other interests.
On some platforms, people even seem to forget that the blockchain preserves a historical record of activities, at least for data recorded on-chain. Quantum computers have not yet made their definitive entrance into this scenario, but that is another story!

BLURT and the DPoS System: What Should Witnesses Be Responsible For?

Let's not waste time and get straight to the point!
Since many of you read what I publish across different platforms, today we are talking about BLURT, a platform based on the DPoS system, which stands for Delegated Proof of Stake.
In simple terms, this is a consensus mechanism in which token holders participate in selecting delegates, often called witnesses or block producers, who are responsible for helping validate transactions and produce new blocks.
These WITNESSES should safeguard the project, protect its users — who are the heart of any platform — and contribute to its growth through meaningful and worthwhile initiatives.
Unfortunately, things do not always work as they should. This is precisely where I want to focus my attention, after observing certain dynamics and directly participating in several initiatives
The question is simple: Are BLURT contests really as transparent as they should be?
To explore this issue, I want to compare two very different models. Two situations that, fortunately, display opposing characteristics in terms of participation and verifiability.
Before we begin, in keeping with the CONSISTENCY I have always tried to maintain throughout my journey on the platforms where I am active, I want to make one thing clear. This article is not intended as a personal attack against anyone, nor is it an indiscriminate attack on BLURT.
I believe BLURT remains a DPoS platform worth considering in certain respects. In others, however, there are issues that deserve much deeper reflection. If I am still writing here, there must be a reason. The real problem will arise when I decide to stop, as I have already done on other platforms.

The "blurtconnect-ng" Minicontest: An Example of Verifiable Participation

Let's start with the first case, or rather, the MINICONTEST organized by blurtconnect-ng.
Recently, I have finished in first place three times in a row. Naturally, this is personally satisfying, but it also raises a question: why is participation in this contest so limited?
Perhaps it is because it requires an action that everyone can see and, if necessary, challenge?
I am referring to the expression of FREE THOUGHT, which lies at the heart of this initiative. The rules and prize allocation procedures are structured in a way that allows users to see what other participants write. This makes it possible to review published contributions and raise objections if the rules appear to have been violated.
Of course, transparency does not automatically eliminate every possible dispute, but it makes community oversight easier.
The Minicontest organized by blurtconnect-ng, unfortunately held somewhat infrequently, is one of those initiatives that deserves greater attention and participation.
Why? Because it can encourage interaction between users, stimulate discussion, and create natural connections between people who might otherwise never interact.
Now imagine what could happen if the initiative received broader support from other WITNESSES, perhaps with increased budgets for prizes. Wouldn't that be a concrete way to encourage participation and contribute to the platform's growth?
This is also one of the reasons why I continue writing in this community, which seems a little more active today than when I first joined BLURT.
If you believe in discussion and participation, join and support the project by searching for it on the BLURT platform.
"We" are tired of seeing the same initiatives sponsored over and over again while other projects and communities struggle to gain visibility. It is time to move beyond internal divisions and take a clearer stand in favor of genuinely shared growth.
For the sake of fairness, let's also remember that blurtconnect-ng is one of the platform's WITNESSES. In my opinion, an initiative like this deserves appropriate support, including greater attention from other witnesses.
Some of them, in my personal assessment, seem far too ASLEEP and insufficiently active in promoting initiatives that could benefit the entire community.

The Other Model: When Repeated Wins Raise Questions

Now let's move to the opposite end of the spectrum.
For several months, I have followed another contest, observing how it operates and how participation unfolds.
I will not name the specific initiative, although it is a public contest and can easily be identified by those who regularly use the platform.
My intention is not to discredit anyone or undermine somebody else's work. However, when certain patterns begin to raise questions, I believe asking for explanations is entirely legitimate.
In my view, the issue is not simply the similarity between certain accounts, a phenomenon that I can now almost laugh about.
Similarities between accounts and content can be found on many platforms, even on more widely known platforms such as Publish0x.
The central issue is something else: the repeated wins of certain accounts.
Over the months, I have observed participation numbers that remained relatively similar, alongside a distribution of victories that, in some cases, appeared particularly repetitive.
I therefore began focusing on what initially seemed like a simple coincidence: the consistent good fortune of a participant whom I later discovered also organizes contests.
Am I simply being too SUSPICIOUS?
Perhaps.
A sequence of wins, on its own, does not prove any irregularity. I acknowledge that.
However, when certain patterns repeat over time and people point them out, I believe it is legitimate to ask whether the winner selection procedures are sufficiently clear and verifiable.
In some cases, these observations seemed to be met with smiles and attitudes that I interpreted as a kind of mockery.
But are we really sure that asking questions is a problem?
Anyone participating in a contest should be able to understand, at least in its essential aspects, how prizes are awarded. Anyone organizing a public initiative should also be willing to explain the rules and the decisions made.
This is not a matter of personal likes or dislikes. It is a matter of TRUST.

Coincidences, Transparency, and Accountability: When the Head of BLURT Wins Too

At this point, I asked myself a question: who am I to judge?
I therefore tried to avoid jumping to conclusions, reminding myself that a coincidence does not automatically constitute proof.
Nevertheless, while observing certain patterns, I remembered an incident worth discussing.
The person in charge of BLURT participated in one of these contest events — and I sincerely hope it was simply a coincidence — on one particular occasion.
Guess who won?
Oops, you have probably already guessed!

3 megadrive vittoria.png

Exactly: him.
What a lucky break! WOW!
The one time he participates, he ends up among the winners.
Was it simply DESTINY?
Naturally, even in this case, a single win does not prove favoritism or manipulation. Supporting such a conclusion would require verifiable evidence.
But that is precisely why I ask: what mechanisms are available to verify that everything is conducted according to clear and impartial criteria?
And more importantly, would BLURT's WITNESSES be willing to intervene if documented irregularities came to light?
It is a legitimate question.
Transparency should not depend on blindly trusting whoever organizes a contest. It should be a concrete feature of the system itself.

The HIVE Precedent: A Lesson I Do Not Want to See Repeated

Those who follow my articles know that I have already addressed similar issues on HIVE.
In the past, after raising certain concerns, I experienced consequences that, in my opinion, damaged the reputation I had worked so hard to build.
I am also referring to downvote bombing, which I have discussed extensively in previous articles about HIVE.
During that experience, I also criticized the way certain user monitoring and verification systems operated, as I considered them ineffective in achieving their stated objectives.
I do not want to revisit the entire story here, but I believe such an experience should serve as a lesson.
A community does not grow by silencing uncomfortable questions, but by learning to respond with verifiable facts.
This is precisely why I do not want to see on BLURT the same dynamics I have already criticized elsewhere.
I am not claiming that the two platforms are identical in every respect. I am saying that certain similarities deserve to be observed and discussed, especially when they concern user trust and the management of community initiatives.
Behind these dynamics, there may be people involved in platform decisions, influencing which initiatives receive support or helping determine the platform's priorities.
This is a sensitive issue that requires data and concrete answers, not mere assumptions.
It also brings me to another topic that I will address in a future article: the role of WITNESSES, resource management, and decisions concerning fees.
Why do some people who constantly complain about financial losses and difficulties seem, at the same time, to support certain initiatives so enthusiastically?
And why do some projects appear to receive more attention than others?
These are questions that deserve clear answers.

How Can BLURT Contests Become More Transparent?

Let's get to what I consider the most important point.
It is not enough to identify a problem; we should also try to propose a solution.
In my opinion, contests based on discretionary winner selection should adopt clearer, documented, and verifiable procedures.
There are several possibilities.
First proposal: Public and verifiable criteria.
Every contest should clearly state its participation rules, evaluation criteria, and prize allocation procedures in advance. Decisions should be understandable and open to challenge through clear procedures.
Second proposal: Verifiable winner selection.
Whenever the contest format allows it, organizers could use a public and verifiable selection method, potentially based on a random selection system with rules established in advance.
Naturally, such a system would need to be carefully designed. It is not enough to claim that a draw is random; it must be possible to verify how it is conducted and, as far as possible, prevent the results from being manipulated.
Third proposal: Greater community participation.
Witnesses could support initiatives that encourage open discussion and participation instead of systematically concentrating attention on a limited number of projects.
Fourth proposal: Change the format when necessary.
If a contest cannot guarantee an adequate level of transparency, it may be appropriate to modify its rules or replace it with an initiative that is clearer and easier to verify.
The goal is not to eliminate contests, but to improve them.
A platform's credibility does not depend solely on how its blockchain operates or how blocks are produced. It also depends on the trust users place in the people and mechanisms governing community life.
And trust cannot simply be demanded; it must be earned.

The Problem Is Not Winning, but Protecting the Credibility of the Entire System

I want to clarify one more point.
Over time, anyone who participates in a contest may win more than once. That is normal.
I have also won on several occasions, and I have no reason to deny it.
The issue, therefore, is not to question every victory or suggest that people who win frequently must be doing something wrong.
The issue is the recurrence of certain patterns, especially when the procedures used to award prizes cannot be adequately verified from the outside.
When users cannot understand how decisions are made, even perfectly legitimate victories risk creating suspicion.
And this harms everyone: organizers, participants, winners, and those who financially support these initiatives.
BLURT's credibility is a collective asset.
If we want the platform to grow, we must avoid creating the perception of a system in which certain projects receive support and visibility while others, perhaps more open and verifiable, remain on the sidelines.
The similarities I see with certain dynamics previously observed on HIVE lead me to call for greater scrutiny, not to make accusations without evidence.
And precisely because I still care about BLURT, I believe the time has come to address these issues openly.

Witnesses, Fees, and Accountability: Is It Time for a Change?

There is one final point I do not want to leave unaddressed.
While some users complain about financial losses and difficulties sustaining their activities, discussions also continue about fees, available resources, and the platform's priorities.
These issues deserve an in-depth analysis, which I will address separately.
But one thing should be clear: anyone holding a position of responsibility within a community should be willing to account for their decisions.
It is not enough to claim that you are acting in the project's best interests. You must demonstrate it through concrete initiatives, understandable rules, and fair treatment of the different communities and projects operating on the platform.
Let's be serious!
Above all, we must stop treating users' questions as if they were personal insults.
Critical thinking is not the enemy of a community. It can be one of the most important tools for improving it.
When people begin to have doubts, it is not always because they want to destroy something. Sometimes, it is precisely because they want to see the project work better.

Does BLURT Really Want to Listen to Its Community?

Let's see whether this article will help bring about any changes or whether everything will continue to be met with the usual indifference.
In the interest of INTELLECTUAL HONESTY, I want to clarify that I currently do not vote for any WITNESS.
This article is not a declaration of war against BLURT. It is an invitation to reflect, verify, and change course.
I believe I have provided enough points to start a serious discussion.
Now, however, I want to see action.
I want to see initiatives supported more fairly, more transparent selection criteria, and witnesses willing to engage openly with criticism from the community.
I do not expect everyone to agree with me. I simply expect discussion not to be replaced by indifference, hostility, or responses that lack concrete evidence.
BLURT's future will also depend on its community's ability to recognize its own shortcomings and correct them.
So here is the final question:
Does BLURT genuinely want to become a more transparent platform, or will we continue talking about decentralization without fully applying its principles to community life?
The floor is yours.
Please remember: be responsible for your actions and act in the best interests of the community.
