It happened in the middle of the night, between October 16th and 17th, 2025.
A quiet residential area near Pomezia, just outside Rome. Then — an explosion.
A powerful blast tore through the stillness of the street. The bomb was placed between two garden pots, just a few meters from the entrance of journalist Sigfrido Ranucci’s house. His car was destroyed. Another car, belonging to his daughter, was also damaged.

And here’s the chilling part: his daughter had parked and gone inside barely twenty minutes before. His son wasn’t home. If timing had been just a little different, this story might have had an unthinkable ending.

Investigators found that the device was a homemade bomb, containing about one kilogram of explosive material and a simple fuse — no timer, no remote trigger. A clear act of intimidation, not a random gesture.
The Rome District Anti-Mafia Directorate is now leading the investigation under the charge of “aggravated damage with mafia intent.”

Ranucci is one of the most well-known investigative journalists in Italy. He’s the face of Report, a program that has spent decades uncovering corruption, financial scandals, and political abuse. Over the years, he’s received threats, intimidation attempts, even bullets left near his home. For this reason, he’s been under police protection — and after this attack, that protection has been strengthened.

The reaction from institutions was immediate. The President of Italy condemned the attack as “a strike against the freedom of information.” The Minister of the Interior ordered tighter security. The national journalists’ union and the public broadcaster RAI expressed full solidarity.

Some investigators are now checking whether this explosion could be linked to Ranucci’s upcoming investigations. He had recently announced new episodes of Report focused on healthcare, education, renewable energy, and finance — areas where corruption and money often intertwine.

Experts think the way the bomb was planted — right next to the gate, with the fuse already lit — suggests the perpetrators wanted to create damage and fear, but without being there when it went off.

Beyond the investigation, what this act truly represents is a symbolic attack. It’s a message — brutal, cowardly, and clear: “Stop digging. Stop exposing.”
But, as Ranucci said soon after the explosion, these cowardly acts will only strengthen our commitment to free, independent journalism.

It’s impossible not to think of Italy’s past — of Falcone, Borsellino, and those who paid the price for standing up against silence and power. The times are different, but the logic of intimidation feels hauntingly familiar.

The public’s role now is crucial. Support journalists. Share verified information. Reject fake news and conspiracy talk. Every democratic society is measured by how it reacts when the truth is under attack.

The investigation continues, and it will take time to find who was behind this. For now, one fact remains: a journalist’s home was bombed, his family narrowly escaped, and the message behind it echoes far beyond that quiet Roman suburb — a warning that freedom of the press still comes at a cost.

Una bomba sotto casa del giornalista Sigfrido Ranucci: quando dire la verità diventa pericoloso

È successo nella notte tra il 16 e il 17 ottobre 2025, in una zona tranquilla vicino a Pomezia, poco fuori Roma.
Una notte come tante, finché un boato improvviso non ha squarciato il silenzio.
Una bomba artigianale, piazzata tra due vasi a pochi metri dall’ingresso della casa del giornalista Sigfrido Ranucci, è esplosa distruggendo la sua auto e danneggiando quella della figlia.

E qui viene il dettaglio più inquietante: la figlia era rientrata appena venti minuti prima. Il figlio non era in casa. Bastava un attimo in più, e oggi staremmo raccontando un’altra storia.

Gli investigatori hanno trovato un ordigno rudimentale con circa un chilo di esplosivo e una miccia semplice — niente timer, niente telecomando. Un gesto chiaramente intimidatorio, non casuale.
Le indagini, affidate alla Direzione Distrettuale Antimafia di Roma, procedono con l’ipotesi di “danneggiamento aggravato dal metodo mafioso.”

Ranucci è uno dei volti più noti del giornalismo investigativo italiano. Da anni, con Report, porta in TV inchieste scomode su potere, affari e politica. Nel tempo ha ricevuto minacce, insulti, proiettili, e per questo vive sotto tutela. Dopo l’esplosione, la scorta è stata rafforzata.

Le istituzioni hanno reagito subito: il Presidente della Repubblica ha definito l’attacco “un colpo alla libertà d’informazione”, il Ministro dell’Interno ha ordinato più protezione, la Rai e la Federazione della Stampa hanno espresso solidarietà.

Alcuni inquirenti ipotizzano che l’attentato possa essere collegato alle prossime inchieste di Report su sanità, scuola, energia e finanza. Gli esperti sottolineano che il modo in cui è stato piazzato l’ordigno — vicino al cancello, pronto a esplodere — suggerisce una volontà di intimidire senza rischiare un contatto diretto.

Ma oltre all’aspetto tecnico, c’è il significato simbolico: colpire un giornalista nel suo spazio privato significa provare a zittire l’informazione, a spaventare chi cerca la verità.
Eppure, come ha detto lo stesso Ranucci, questi atti codardi non fermeranno il giornalismo libero e d’inchiesta.

Impossibile non pensare ai tempi di Falcone e Borsellino, a quella lotta tra verità e potere che ha segnato l’Italia. Le forme cambiano, ma la logica dell’intimidazione è la stessa: colpire chi indaga, sperando di spegnere la luce.

Oggi più che mai serve un impegno collettivo: sostenere i giornalisti, condividere solo notizie verificate, difendere il diritto di sapere. Una democrazia si misura anche da come reagisce quando qualcuno prova a imbavagliare la libertà di stampa.

L’inchiesta andrà avanti, e serviranno tempo e pazienza per scoprire chi c’è dietro. Ma una cosa è certa: un giornalista è stato colpito per il suo lavoro, e il messaggio lanciato da quella bomba parla a tutti noi — ricordandoci che la verità, ancora oggi, può essere pericolosa.
