Yesterday, on September 17, the fast-food giant we all know so well, McDonald's, celebrated a historic victory in the investing world. The McDonald's Board of Directors declared a quarterly cash dividend of $1.93 per share, which is a 4% increase compared to the previous payout of $1.86. To help you understand the scale of this achievement: the company has maintained this trend for 50 consecutive years, literally increasing its dividend payouts every single year. That is why McDonald's has now officially earned the legendary status of a Dividend King. For those who aren't deeply involved in the investing world, let me explain what a Dividend King actually is. In the world of finance, investors often use these unofficial titles to evaluate the future prospects and stability of a business's payouts:
- Dividend Challengers (5-9 consecutive years): Broadcom (AVGO), Goldman Sachs (GS)
- Dividend Contenders (10-24 consecutive years): Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Visa (V)
- Dividend Champions / Aristocrats (25+ consecutive years): Altria Group (MO), ExxonMobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX) - (Note: McDonald's just graduated from this group!)
- Dividend Kings (50+ consecutive years): Procter & Gamble (PG), Coca-Cola (KO), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) - and now, McDonald's (MCD)!
Simply put, Dividend Kings are the absolute elite of the elite. There are fewer than 60 companies in the entire world that have consistently raised their dividends for 50 or more straight years. By achieving this title, McDonald's joins the ranks of long-term wealth giants like Coca-Cola and Target. And as funny as it may sound, despite global inflation, the AI boom, or geopolitical instability around the world, people will never stop buying Big Macs.
Let's look at some key numbers:
- New Quarterly Dividend: $1.93 per share (up from $1.86).
- Annualized Payout: $7.72 per share.
- Dividend Yield: Around 3.1% based on recent stock prices.
Important Note: The dividend is payable on December 15, 2026, to shareholders of record as of December 1, 2026.
"This milestone is the result of decades-long commitment to maintaining our financial discipline and rewarding our shareholders," said Ian Borden, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Financial Officer.
Additionally, the company is preparing to share details about the next phase of its growth strategy during its upcoming Investor Day on September 23, 2026.
To be completely honest, I personally prefer and get more excited about high-risk assets, and I think that applies to most of you reading this blog. However, McDonald's teaches us a powerful lesson about sustainable cash flow and the magic of compounding interest. A business model capable of consistently generating enough cash to reward shareholders with raises for 50 years in a row truly deserves its royal crown and the official title of a Dividend King.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my article! I wish you all a wonderful day ahead, good health, and, most importantly, peaceful skies over your heads.
