No Copper, No AI

No Copper, No AI

It is no secret that the world is currently swept by an AI fever. Tech companies and investors alike are pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into building next-generation data centers. However, the vital artery of this digital revolution lies not in the realm of software, but deep underground. We are talking about copper. I have recently written about this sector and the challenges it faces, and a fresh analysis from investment giant Apollo Global Management only underscores and confirms all these concerns.

The root of the problem lies in a massive time mismatch. The AI industry is expanding exponentially, demanding new capacities here and now. In contrast, the mining sector is bound to incredibly slow, long-term processes.  While building a modern AI-driven data center takes a mere 2 to 3 years with the demand for copper cables, transformers, and cooling systems rising almost daily - bringing new metal to the market is a different story.

Copper mining is an inherently sluggish process. For reference, discovering a new copper deposit, securing permits, building out infrastructure, and launching commercial production takes an average of 18 years.

According to Apollo analysts, major copper discoveries ( deposits containing at least 500,000 tons of metal ) have plummeted from double-digit figures annually in the 1990s and 2000s to just one or two in recent years. In fact, not a single major copper deposit was discovered globally in 2025.

In short, analysts predict that by the 2040s, the global economy will hit a "dead zone" in supply. The world will simply lack the new mines needed to satisfy demand. The situation is further aggravated by the fact that ore grades at existing, aging mines are deteriorating rapidly, making extraction increasingly expensive and complex.

When the lightning-fast demand from AI collides with harsh geological reality, a severe structural shortage becomes inevitable. While AI developers are busy optimizing software code, the physical metals market is bracing for turbulent times. This is why copper, which many now rightly call the "new oil," remains that single critical resource without which the digital transformation will simply stall in the darkness of unpowered servers.
