Today we woke up with Bitcoin at $23,600 and Ethereum at $1,600 at the time of writing this post. We have dropped after yesterday that was above $24,000 and $1,700 respectively.
But what about Bitcoin mining and crypto mining?
In some of the news that I read, they talked about a farm in Argentina that is going to use excrement for Bitcoin mining. That news was not new to me because I already know of a project in Spain to do the same thing, so I decided to look a little more into the subject. It was not very difficult to find two other cases, a farm in Ireland and the one that caught my attention despite being the oldest (2021): a toilet that converts feces into energy (it supplies a stove, a gas boiler, and a solid oxide fuel cell) and rewards with a cryptocurrency that is used to pay in the high school bar.
This type of technology could end the debate about the ecological sustainability of mining. But for me what it does is open another debate. How many resources are being invested in achieving clean and cheap energy? How many resources are being invested in stopping the development of this type of technology?
I am not talking now about mining Bitcoin, but about being able to supply ourselves with clean energy, about stopping using the sea as a landfill for humanity, and trying to ensure that we do not have to go out in astronaut suits until we are on Mars.
