Escape From Tarkov introduces "High-Ping-Kick" & splits the community

By FlareCO | Game News | 4 Apr 2020

Escape From Tarkov has a problem with ping abusers and general connection problems. Developer Battlestate Games now wants to tackle these issues and is splitting the community.

Facebook thunderstorm: On the official Facebook page of the Russian developer Battlestate Games, the responsible persons have announced that they want to start a test today, April 03, 2020. This test refers to the high pings of some players.

More precisely, players who exceed a ping of 250 ms should not be kicked off the server immediately. It takes a while before a player is removed from the game. With this test the devs want to counter ping abusers. The only problem is that it does not only affect unfair players, but also honest and loyal fans.

What is a Ping-Abuser & what advantages does it have?
A Ping-Abuser is a player who deliberately connects to distant servers to give his ping the extra spice. This spice is shown by the high distance to the server - and back again - in form of an extremely high ping.

Video evidence: Players who do this will gain an advantage because the servers will take longer to calculate their current location in the game. This gives the users of the exploit a small-time window in which they see the opponent earlier than he sees them. In a video, user Harrison Brooks shows what the abuse looks like.

High-ping kick in Escape From Tarkov something good?
Yes and no. Surely kicking the players to create stability is a possible solution. But to set the limit at 250 ms ping is too high. Another problem are the general server problems of the game. It is also often the case that players near a server suffer from high pings.

This is what the community says: While one side loudly opposes this test, others like it. But where does this difference of opinion come from and couldn't there be a better solution?

For example, some users fear that they will no longer be able to play with their friends from overseas because they will be kicked due to the ping limit. The problems we have already mentioned the Escape From Tarkov servers are also often attached.

"Great, (...) so we can't do EFT on the weekend because we happen to get kicked for a high ping that your servers themselves are causing.

Opposite side: The proponents of the high-ping kick that the developers want to introduce in Escape From Tarkov think it is anything but unfair. A low ping, gives everyone the same chance. If you have bad internet and can't help it, you don't play Counter Strike or other competitive games.

But many voices also come from Asia. Here some players complain that their servers are literally overrun by Europeans and Americans in order to gain an advantage.

There is a solution that can satisfy everyone!
In the comment section on Facebook and via Reddit, some users tend to avoid the disputes and look for a solution that can bring all parties together.

This is what is called "Region Locks". This is a system that recognizes which region of the world you come from, so that you can only connect to servers near you. Another good suggestion is this one:

"Why don't players just go to Ping-Pong and get matched up? Players who have a very high ping should only get into a lobby with opponents who are similarly disconnected.

Not without flaws: The user's suggestion seems to offer a good approach at the first moment. In groups, however, you would have to orientate yourself towards the player with the highest ping, which would only bring the gaming experience for all other group members even further down.

But so far this seems to be the best solution. Whether or not Battlestate Games is oriented towards the criticism of the community remains to be seen. So far everything seems to come down to the high-ping kick.
