This week I learned a painful lesson in crypto.
I checked my Publish0x dashboard and saw I had $1.37 USDC tips. I was happy. But when I opened my Trust Wallet and Phantom wallet on my phone, both were empty. $0.00
I was confused and scared. Did I lose my money?
After checking the blockchain explorer, I found the truth. My money was still safe on the Optimism network at address 0xfB42...69Be. The problem was, that wallet was not imported on my current phone. My current Trust Wallet is a completely different address: 0x6f43...59Bce.
My $1.37 was there, but I didn't have the key to open the door.
Here is what I learned:
1. Your crypto is not IN your app. It's on the blockchain.
Your app is just a window to see it. If you delete the app or change phone, the money stays on blockchain.
2. The 12-word seed phrase IS your money.
Without those 12 words, you cannot import your old address. No email recovery, no password reset. Those 12 words are everything.
3. Always write your new wallet address down.
I had two wallets and I didn't know which one was which. Now I label them.
I am still searching for my 12-word phrase for my old wallet. I know my $1.37 is safe there until I find it.
If you are new to crypto, please learn from me. When you create a wallet, write those 12 words on paper with pen. Keep it safe.
Have you ever lost access to a wallet? How did you recover it? Tell me in comments.
