The Taj Mahal was constructed in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. It's an enormous mausoleum to his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The taj Mahal it's also the his tomb to the Shah Jahan. It's located in Agra, India close to Yamuna River. To finish the construction of the Taj Mahal it was necessary 22000 laborers, 1000 elephants and something about 20 years, occupying 17-hectares.


Some facts

The Taj Mahal contains a working mosque and is closed on Fridays for prayer.

Construction of the Taj Mahal costed something around 32 million Indian rupees (US $1 billion at the time).

In 2008, a Bangladeshi filmmaker constructed a replica of the Taj Mahal at a cost of US $56 million dollars so that his impoverished countrymen in Bangladesh could enjoy the famous monument without traveling to India. The replication took five years to complete with modern equipment. 

It has Islamic calligraphy inscriptions all over.


The Taj Mahal attract over 7 million every year being one of the most visited places in India.
