When citizens support war abroad Part I

By Keith Thuerk | Financial Stewardship | 16 Jun 2023

When citizens support war abroad, it can have various impacts on economies. Here are some ways in which economies can change under such circumstances: In this Part I of the series I will cover several aspects to be familiar with in the event that another Global Conflict arises:

Military Spending:

Typically engaging in a war requires significant financial resources.  Governments in-turn allocate greater funds to the military for equipment, training, and operational expenses. This increased military spending can stimulate the economy, particularly the defense industry, as defense contractors and suppliers experience increased demand for their products and services. This can lead to job creation and economic growth in these sectors.

Government Budget Priorities:

Citizens supporting a war abroad will discover, governments will reallocate resources from other areas to fund military operations. This can result in reduced spending in sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and social welfare programs. As a consequence, citizens may experience changes in the availability and quality of public services, and these budgetary shifts can have long-term implications to the overall economy.

Debt and Financing:

Wars are expensive undertakings, and governments may need to borrow money to finance them. This can lead to increased national debt, which may have long-term consequences for the economy. Governments may need to divert a significant portion of their budgets to debt servicing, reducing resources available for other areas such as infrastructure development or social programs.

Inflation and Taxation:

Governments may resort to inflationary measures, such as printing more money, to finance wars. This can lead to a rise in prices and a decrease in the purchasing power of citizens. Additionally, governments may introduce new taxes or increase existing ones to generate revenue for war efforts, affecting individuals and businesses.

In our next part of the series I will discuss economic uncertainty and supply impact
