When it comes to achieving our goals and living a fulfilling life, we turn to motivation as the main driver. We are bombarded with inspirational quotes, uplifting videos, and success stories that fuel our enthusiasm, for a few moments. Motivation can be a powerful force, but if we truly want to achieve lasting success, it's discipline that will carry us through the long haul. I believe, on the long term discipline is the true key to unlocking our potential.
Motivation, through its undeniable charm will drop upon us an initial spark that starts our ambitions, setting us on a path towards greatness, making us believe that anything is possible, indeed. We feel on top of the world or very close to conquer the world with our dreams. Motivation pushes us to take the first step, to push limits, and to envision a better version of ourselves. It provides the emotional power we need to get started.
However, I find motivation so unstable, changeable. It fluctuates, leaving us at the mercy of external factors. I cannot count how many time I felt so energised and strongly energised after watching or reading motivational content. Made to just steal attention, is nothing but a shortly lived emotional pump, that unfortunately, will not last. When faced with obstacles, difficulties, or setbacks it can simply disappear. It's easy to feel motivated when everything is going well, but what happens when life throws difficulties our way? After all, is not all sunshine and rainbows all the time. So, in those times, discipline steps in, as a humble and silent hero helping you cope through all difficulties.
Discipline is what separates dreamers from the doers, the talkers from the achievers, turning aspirations into actual realities.
I believe that making routines and developing self discipline is one of the hardest achievements for us people. It demands sacrifice, consistency, and the willingness to push beyond our comfort zones. Is hard sometimes to make the tough choices, deny distractions and make efforts to do the work when we most probably feel like it the least. It means showing up constantly, even on the days when we are tired, without inspiration, powerless, apathetic or in doubts.
Thinking about the process of developing such routine, I see it as a journey of self awareness, consistency, knowing own limitations and setting realistic limitations. There are techniques and strategies that say help with developing discipline on the long term as a habit, such as:
- setting clear goals, aligned with the values and own limitations, which gives a sense of meaning and direction
- developing routine and follow it no matter what, because consistency will build discipline that helps overcome the resistance to taking action when needed
- finding support from friends, family or a community of like minded people that will support, motivate and held accountability as shared experiences make the transformation process more enjoyable, providing the extra push when needed
- taking care of own physical and mental well being, by resting exercising and nourishing the self with health habits. A healthy mind develops in a disciplined body
By adopting discipline, we can so cultivate and develop personal growth, shaping aspirations and lives. The rewarding feeling during this transformation journey will always stay with us.
However, I realised that motivation and discipline are not mutually exclusive, but they do in fact complement and reinforce each other. The initial spark ignited by motivation will be sustained by discipline on the long term, keeping the flame still.
