Monday Weekly tech Dose (ep. 1: A Patchy Server)

By AX17 | figurehowtowrite | 12 Feb 2024

Week starts are difficult so will try to ad a little fun touch to my writing routines. I will look into the fun side of the things for specific IT related topics and of course also blockchain. The subjects are random and are tools that I am either using every day or try to learn about them. In hopes that will not use online space in vain, I hope such posts to help me boost my creativity and stay consistent while bringing something new to the readers.

Today is about Apache. The web server used for web development, not the tribe. Is well known its role in powering many of the websites and web applications on the internet but what about some less things known or intriguing about Apache?

  • Its name is actually not only a tribute to the Native American tribe. Originally, Apache was created as a bunch of "patches" yo the original NCSA HTTPd server code. That was called a "patchy server" which turned into the name APACHE.

  • This one is not new or unknown but worth mentioning as it is quite funny - a welcome message that you did the server configuration right is : "It works!". Such a message upon visiting the local host root URL is iconic characteristic of Apache installations.

  • Another feature which was later on removed for security reasons was a Happy Birthday header message when it was your server's date of configuration time.
  • Apache is a central component of the "LAMP" Stack used for web development. But there are variations like WAMP and MAMP. Each stach is specifically tailored to an operating system.

  • Apache does not have a mascot but some user enthusiasts have adopted its de facto mascot as the logo feather which is incorporated into their developments as a tribute to the community and the good things they can build with Apache

  • is not unusual for Apache to be used as a verb in the tech communities: "We'll Apache that solution" meaning to implement it using Apache technologies

So that was the Monday tech dose which you will read on a Tuesday.
