Many of us probably collected trading cards as a kid and went to a kiosk to buy a pack. Later we found out that there are people who pay hundreds of thousands of dollars just for one single trading card, for example a Michael Jordan card that sold for $420,000.
But what is NBA Top Shot?
NBA Top Shot is a platform that was created by the same company that built the App CryptoKitties that was popular during the 2017 bull run. The problem back then were the extremely high gas fees that made users unable to withdraw from their account. To solve this problem they build their own blockchain, the "FLOW blockchain".
On NBA Top Shot you collect moments, which are like trading cards, but now they are digital NFTs, that can either be packed out of packs that you can buy or you buy them at the marketplace. These moments are highlights from NBA games that you can watch as an about 14-second highlight clip.
And why could it be the future?
Some might argue that we could also watch these highlights on YouTube, but you could also use Google to watch the trading card image from Michael Jordan. And there are already moments that sold for $125,000!! NBA Top Shot recently received a lot of attention, especially on Twitter, but still I think that it is currently just in the beginning. There are some problems right now, for example they shut down the marketplace multiple times, because of issues with the servers, and temporarily they also disabled new Sign-Ups, so they definitely have to improve their servers, but I think they know that it is a multimillion, if not multibillion, dollar market, so I'm pretty sure that they will do that.
