I like walking with STEPN. Although their tokens GMT & GST have plummeted with time, it is easy to use and to convert GMT & GST into other tokens like Solana (SOL) by using Solana blockchain and its low gas fees. However, as STEPN uses GPS and hence consumes a lot of battery power, I started to wonder if it was really worth it. Therefore, I walked for 20 minutes by using my trainer level 30 (I have 3 sneakers, allowing to earn GMT for 20 minutes), and looked at the battery. When I started the battery was at 90%, whereas at the end it was 70%. I used 20% of it.
How much does it cost to fully charge the battery?
I use a Xiaomi Redmi 9. Therefore, the battery capacity is 5020 mAh, and hence it requires 1104.4 Wh, i.e. 1.1044 kWh, to fully charge it with 220 V. The price of 1 kWh with my current electricity supplier is around EUR 0.16. Therefore, the cost of the full battery charge is around EUR 0.18.
How much did the walk with Stepn cost me and how much did I earn?
The cost of my walk with STEPN was around 20% of the full charge cost, i.e., about EUR 0.02. I earned 1.63 GMT, i.e., about EUR 0.92. Therefore, by removing the electricity cost of EUR 0.02, the net earning is around EUR 0.90, which is still worth it since it makes EUR 27 per month net of power cost.
Conclusion
Using STEPN is still worth it vs. electricity cost, provided that you turn off your GPS after the walk. You can also use some other move-to-earn applications like Sweatcoin at the same time which will count your steps without using your GPS and will give you some additional benefits.
