Is Optimism (OP) Dead?

By Bfab | Good vibes | 19 Feb 2026

I've been staring at my screen for the past hour trying to figure out how I feel about what Base announced today.

For those who missed it, Coinbase's Base blockchain just officially broke up with Optimism. After three years of building together, Base is ditching the OP Stack and moving to their own in-house technology. They're pulling their seat on the Security Council, ending the revenue sharing arrangement, and essentially saying thanks for everything, we'll take it from here.

And the market reacted immediately. OP token down over 20% in a matter of hours.

So the question everyone is dancing around but not quite saying out loud is: is Optimism dead?

I don't think it's that simple. Optimism built something genuinely important. The OP Stack became the blueprint for how serious teams launch Layer 2 chains. World Chain, Zora, Mode, dozens of others are still running on it. The Superchain vision isn't gone overnight just because its most profitable tenant decided to move out.

But here's what I keep coming back to. Base wasn't just another chain on the OP Stack. It was the chain. The one generating the fees, attracting the users, carrying the weight of what the whole ecosystem was supposed to become. When your anchor leaves, you don't just lose revenue. You lose the narrative.

Optimism now has to prove that the Superchain can thrive without Coinbase's distribution behind it. That's a very different and much harder story to tell than it was yesterday.

I'm not writing the obituary yet. But I am watching closely. Because what happens in the next six months for Optimism will tell us a lot about whether shared infrastructure models in crypto actually work, or whether every serious player eventually decides they need to own their own stack.

Today felt like a turning point. I just don't know yet which direction it turns.
