CHARACTERS: CORIPHEUS, EROS, URANUS, GAIA, CRONUS, TARTARUS, HYPNUS, PONTUS, BRONTES, STEROPES, ARGES

CORIPHEUS:

In the unvarying power, matter and antimatter converge: the first war and the first love. A lustrum passed, then a decade, and finally a supereon. Darkness continued to make way for the nascent stars, but URANUS, a conglomerate of clustered lights, felt lonely and desperate. A forge of stars, a mottled cloak, he tamed Canis Majoris, which he sheltered in Canis Major. Yet, he still could not find the star to quench the intense fires of his heart.

(With an expression of incredulity, EROS approaches, surprised by URANUS' lack of skill as a conqueror. The god of love turns to the starry sky).

EROS:

—Why complicate matters, my friend? End this delirium. Cease thinking that love resides in the heights; look to the hem of your cloak and shake out your himation.

CORIPHEUS:

URANUS, upon shaking his garment, causes stardust to fall upon GAIA, the maiden. The particles form flaming steeds that wreak havoc among the reduced group of rocks surrounding ATHÓN, he of the outstretched hands. The dust of the mottled cloak envelops the ardent lady. URANUS' avid eyes fill with Uranian tears.

URANUS:

—A moment of pain, forgive me, my fair one!

CORIPHEUS:

URANUS takes her in the presence of her maidens, who, noticing the violence, leave their queen alone and fly off in terror. Immediately, a beautiful radiance manifests in the starry bedchamber. URANUS, with eyes reflecting joy, asks her:

URANUS:

—From which star do you come? Oh, albor! Oh, aurora! Densely woven flower of colors, you enthrall me! Figure with blushing cheeks, here, my kiss is for you! (He gives her a tender kiss, which she receives with pleasure). Tender flower of delicious morning nectar, from your eyes flows the ambrosia that vivifies me. Indeed, I revel in your rose-colored eyes and the rubicund buds of your breasts.

CORIPHEUS:

And then GAIA, she of the erect breasts and snowy arms, shows herself elusive and playful, yet troubled, for her body commanded her while her conscience reproached her.

URANUS:

—What have I done to you, elusive treasure? One moment you show yourself spirited in my arms, and the next, you rebuke me with your deific eyes.

EROS:

    (Aside to URANUS)

—My friend, she responds to passion and flees from reason —shaking his head—. That extinguishes the fervor. You wish to conquer her, I know. Let your body be the one to speak, and accompany your words with caresses, but never to excess! You must appear both a fool and a sage, with intervals of fragility.

CORIPHEUS:

And GAIA became pregnant, giving birth to three HECATONCHIRES: BRIAREUS, GYGES, and COTTUS. Later, she also conceived the formidable CYCLOPES: BRONTES, STEROPES, and ARGES. Order reigned on earth and she could dedicate more time to the barren fields, marshes, and grottos, for the earthly realm was entirely at the discretion of the giants.

GAIA visits them in the form of dew. They, intrigued by the arrival of their mother, begin to inquire:

STEROPES:

—Why have you come, dear mother? Forgive us; in this moment, the precious meat has escaped us. I have nothing to offer you to fulfill the law of hospitality.

GAIA:

—Do not worry, beloved children. I have not come for sacrifices. You have already offered me your love in sacrifice. I have come to indulge your most hidden desire.

ARGES:

—Divine mother, we can hide nothing from you. You already know of our longing for mortal creatures.

CORIPHEUS:

This idea did not please the starry URANUS. It was already enough for him to bear the deformity of his strange offspring. Thus, HYPNUS saw in the dreaming of URANUS the opportunity to take revenge for TARTARUS, and feeding the desire of the starry sky, he lulled GAIA into a winged sleep. Meanwhile, the noxious father cast them into the TARTARUS of shadows, into the prison of bronze and scorching fire.

Millennia passed, and GAIA did not forgive him, yet the attraction toward the jailer of her children grew, thanks to HYPNUS and his deceptive dreams. She held hope that things would improve with the new birth, the TITANS: OCEANUS, COEUS, HYPERION, CRIUS, IAPETUS, and CRONUS, and the TITANIDES.

HYPNUS continued covering URANUS' tracks with LETHE. But GAIA was visited by the awakened EROS, who said to her:

EROS:

—Why do I see you obscured, my sister? I perceive the LETHE in your eyes.

CORIPHEUS:

He extends his hand and touches her eyes. The veil falls, and she remembers her anger.

GAIA:

—I do not wish to give voice to my intentions, but this grievance can only be covered with vengeance. Let PONTUS be born of me! I long to frolic with him!

URANUS:

—My dear lady, so beautiful and so quarrelsome, do you not see my magnitude? If your strength were proportional to your beauty, I, by one of your kisses, would be undone.

GAIA:

—I do not fear your stature, and I want nothing of your wisdom. You ignore, most sapient lord, that stature is not a sign of victory. It is true, I am small, but with my spirit and my lips, I would conquer you.

URANUS:

—Undoubtedly, GAIA, your aggression enamors me. Understand this once and for all, woman! You will bow to my strength, and yoked to my desires, you shall not evade my starry bedchamber. Prepare my bed, for I burn like a torch! By the gods! I have risen with the fury of a comet. Come, adorn the attire of my chest with your cerulean eyes!

GAIA:

—Lord, you know how to please the body; nonetheless, I still feel as ardent as ETNA. I am now your prisoner in this starry bedchamber. Concupiscence, lasciviousness, lust, ardor, and lugubrious passion: in your hands, I am a crucible! I do not like this sensation. The carnal act is not meant to be the sun in our relationship.

CORIPHEUS:

She still feigned to be possessed and, finding herself pregnant, went to seek help.
