MAN STRESSED OUT

STICKS & STONES

By 072wxw | Colloquialism vs. Truth | 18 Apr 2024

Today I am talking about a colloquialism from my childhood.  I have heard it said many times in our society when the intended message was to say you need to be less sensitive, or to tell someone to have tougher skin so to speak.  "Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me."

Brothers and sisters,

Why are we so careless with our words?

What if you knew that the person that you cussed out or insulted or swore at/offended went home and killed themselves?

The last person that they heard from was you…

How would that make you feel?

What if you had to live with that for the rest of your life?

Your words have the power of life and death

A Lie: “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me….”

THE TRUTH:

PROVERBS 18:21

Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.

This truth stands that the power of your words lingers even if you say I was joking or I'm joking.

Woah! Wait! I need to read that again…

DEATH

And

LIFE…

What if on judgement day, you learned that your words caused a person to take their own life?

AND YOU NEVER KNEW…

WHAT YOU SAID…

CAUSED THIS…

man in yellow jacket and pants holding white and red plane

found dead in house with gas on no signs of forced entry person left a suicide note.
On judgement day this may be a sad reality for a lot of people…

You can’t change the past…

However, you have a CHOICE…

Ephesians 4:29 KJV

29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Brothers and sisters,

Choose to love people with your words always.

If you are in a situation where you might say something you regret shut your mouth and say nothing at all…

For it is written:
Matthew 12:36
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment
.
This is a bone chilling thought, considering that the average person speaks 10,950,000 words per year.  Do you really remember every word that you said yesterday?  What about last week? You must get a handle on the things that you say.   We will be judged by the One who is not governed by time.

Matthew 5:22 NLT
But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.

And yet sadly… We are saying even worse things to others….

1 John 4:20
If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

Ephesians 4:29 AMP
29 Do not let unwholesome [foul, profane, worthless, vulgar] words ever come out of your mouth, but only such speech as is good for building up others, according to the need and the occasion, so that it will be a blessing to those who hear [you speak].

James 3:3-6 & 9-12 NIV

3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
