π Card Spotlight #76: Wasp β The Founder Who Named the Avengers
---
*She was there at the beginning. She sat in that room with Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Ant-Man and said: "Let's call ourselves the Avengers." Without Janet Van Dyne, Earth's Mightiest Heroes don't have a name. Without the Wasp, there is no Avengers. It's time she got her proper spotlight.*

The Founding Avenger Who Never Gets Enough Credit
Yesterday we celebrated **Ant-Man** at Post #75 β both Hank Pym and Scott Lang, the two men who have worn the suit. Today we spotlight the woman who has been beside them β and in many ways, ahead of them β from the very beginning.
**Janet Van Dyne. The Wasp.** Founding Avenger. Long-time team leader. The person who looked at a group of extraordinary individuals assembled in crisis and said "I know what to call us." Without that moment, without Janet's instinct for the name that would define Marvel's greatest team, the Avengers might have been called something completely different.
History has a way of forgetting the people who held things together. Today we remember. π

Who Is the Wasp?
Janet van Dyne is usually depicted as having the ability to shrink to a height of several centimeters, fly by means of insectoid wings, and fire bioelectric energy blasts. She is a founding member of the Avengers and the one who gave them their name as well as a longtime leader of the team.
Janet Van Dyne, daughter of world-renowned scientist Vernon Van Dyne, is a founding member and long-time leader of the Avengers, with the ability to shrink, fly and control insects.
Janet Van Dyne first appeared in **Tales to Astonish #44 in June 1963** β created by Stan Lee, Ernie Hart, and Jack Kirby β as a wealthy socialite whose scientist father was killed by an alien creature. She convinced Hank Pym to give her Pym Particles and a specially designed suit, and together they defeated the creature responsible for her father's death. She became the Wasp β and she never stopped.
What distinguished Janet from the beginning was her voice. While other Avengers β Thor, Iron Man, Hulk β brought power and drama and cosmic significance, Janet brought something equally valuable: personality. She was witty, fashionable, socially fluent, and possessed of an emotional intelligence that the rest of the team frequently lacked. She understood people. She understood politics. She understood that a team of superheroes needed more than raw power β it needed cohesion, identity, and someone willing to make the human decisions.
She was also, for much of the Avengers' early history, their chairwoman β leading Earth's Mightiest Heroes through some of their most difficult challenges. She deserves to be named alongside Captain America and Iron Man when people discuss the Avengers' great leaders. She is not.
The Powers Behind the Wings
Every version of the Wasp can shrink down to the size of their namesake, thanks to the use of Pym Particles. Being as tiny as an insect makes her one of the most useful powers in the Marvel universe.
While one might think that shrinking to the size of a bug might lead to a serious strength drop, that's never been the case for the Wasp. Originally, Janet Van Dyne is almost as strong in wasp-size as she is at her normal stature. But a serum Hank Pym devises for her years later actually makes her strength grow the more she reduces her size.
Beyond size manipulation, Janet fires **bioelectric energy blasts** β the famous "Wasp stings" that can stun opponents, disrupt electronics, and in her most powerful form, do significant damage to beings far larger than herself. She has insectoid wings that allow true flight in her reduced form. And after her extended time in the Quantum Realm, her physiology was altered to allow size manipulation without the need for Pym Particles at all.
She is more capable than most people give her credit for. That is a sentence that has been true about Janet Van Dyne for sixty-plus years.
The Quantum Realm and the MCU
Michelle Pfeiffer portrays Janet van Dyne in the MCU films Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023).
The MCU's Janet Van Dyne is one of its most fascinating tragic figures: a woman who vanished into the Quantum Realm in the 1980s while on a mission to disarm a Soviet ICBM β shrinking past the point of no return to save millions of lives, leaving her husband Hank and daughter Hope behind. She survived the Quantum Realm for decades through extraordinary resourcefulness and strength.
Michelle Pfeiffer brought enormous grace and complexity to the role β giving us a Janet who emerged from isolation changed in ways she couldn't fully explain, carrying secrets and new abilities from her Quantum Realm experience that rippled through *Quantumania* with genuine dramatic weight.
**Hope Van Dyne** β played by **Evangeline Lilly** β is the MCU's primary Wasp, inheriting her mother's legacy and proving more than worthy of it across three films. Her appearances have been praised for their authentic and relatable portrayal of a superheroine.

Wasp in Marvel Snap β The Free Foundation
π Card #1: Wasp (Original β Starter Card)
Contrary to other characters like Ant-Man and Yellow Jacket, Wasp doesn't have any abilities. Additionally, her card costs 0, but it also adds only one power point to any location where players play it.
Zero energy. One Power. No ability.
The most minimal card in the entire game. And yet β she is everywhere. Because 0-Cost cards that provide board presence without spending any energy are extraordinarily flexible, and that flexibility is precisely what makes Wasp so broadly useful across so many different archetypes.
She costs nothing. She shows up. She fills a slot. And that's often exactly what you need.
**The Ka-Zar Engine** β Ka-Zar gives all your 1-Cost cards +1 Power. Wasp costs 0 β but in Marvel Snap, 0-Cost cards are typically treated as 1-Cost for Ka-Zar's ability calculation? Actually: Wasp's card costs 0 β meaning she works with **Quinjet** (which discounts created cards) and other 0-Cost synergies rather than Ka-Zar. She's the free body that doesn't cost a turn, filling locations and triggering abilities without spending precious energy on early turns.
**The Ant-Man Synergy** β We covered Ant-Man yesterday (Post #75!). His Ongoing condition requires a **full location** β all four slots on your side occupied. Wasp fills one of those slots for free, counting toward Ant-Man's full-location condition without costing you any energy. Drop Wasp, drop Ant-Man, play two more cheap cards, and Ant-Man's +4 Power Ongoing fires from turn 1 onward.
**The High Evolutionary Evolved Ability** β This is where Wasp gets genuinely interesting. When **High Evolutionary** is in your deck, cards with no printed ability gain secret Evolved abilities. Wasp has the Evolved ability: "On Reveal: Afflict a random enemy card here with -1 Power."
A 0-Cost card that reduces an enemy card's Power by 1 on reveal. Free board presence AND free disruption in a single play. In High Evolutionary decks β which we explored with **Cyclops Evolved (Post #32!)** and **Abomination Evolved (Post #66!)** β Wasp becomes a 0-Cost disruption tool that pairs naturally with USAgent (Post #50!), Man-Thing, and the broader negative Power shell.
π Card #2: Nadia Van Dyne / Wasp (Series 5)
The second Wasp card represents **Nadia Van Dyne** β the daughter of Hank Pym and his first wife Maria, who was raised in the Red Room (the same program that created Black Widow, whom we covered in Post #36!) before escaping and establishing herself as a hero in her own right, calling herself Wasp in honor of the stepmother she'd never met.
Nadia Van Dyne Wasp is a Series 5 card that costs 2 energy and has 3 Power with the On Reveal ability: "Give the cards in your hand that cost 3 or more -1 Cost."
A 2-Cost card that discounts every card in your hand costing 3 or more by 1 energy. In a deck full of expensive finishers β 5 and 6-Cost cards β Nadia's discount can be the difference between playing your full hand on the final turns or having energy left over to do something extra.
She is the ramp piece the size-manipulation family needed: Hank Pym created the technology, Janet named the team, Hope carried the legacy, and Nadia makes the deck run faster.

How to Play Wasp Today
**The Free Slot Filler** β Drop original Wasp on turn 1 or 2 at any location for 0 energy to fill a slot without spending resources. She contributes 1 Power and a filled slot while you spend your actual energy on cards that matter. In tight energy situations on early turns, she is the card that lets you do two things at once.
**The Ant-Man Full Location Setup** β Play Wasp at Ant-Man's location (Post #75!) to help fill all four slots faster. She costs nothing. She counts toward the full-location condition. Two cheap cards plus Wasp plus Ant-Man is a full location by turn 2 β Ant-Man's +4 Power Ongoing fires immediately.
**The High Evolutionary Package** β In a High Evolutionary deck with Cyclops Evolved, Abomination Evolved, and other secret-ability cards, Wasp's Evolved -1 Power afflict gives the deck a free 0-Cost disruption tool. Drop her alongside USAgent for a location where every enemy card is simultaneously debuffed from two separate sources.
**The Nadia Discount Engine** β Run Nadia Van Dyne Wasp in any deck running multiple expensive cards. Her -1 Cost to all 3+ Cost cards in hand on the turn she's played gives you flexibility on subsequent turns β potentially allowing an extra card per turn in the critical turns 4-6.
**The Ka-Zar / Blue Marvel Zoo** β In the Zoo shell we built around Ant-Man (Post #75!), Wasp fills slots without energy cost, helping trigger Ant-Man's full-location condition while Ka-Zar's buff reaches every 1-Cost card and Blue Marvel buffs everything simultaneously.
**Best Synergy Cards β Original Wasp:**
- **Ant-Man** β Fills her location slot toward his full-location condition (Post #75!)
- **High Evolutionary** β Unlocks her Evolved -1 Power afflict ability
- **Ka-Zar** β Zoo deck companion that buffs 1-Cost cards
- **Blue Marvel** β Zoo deck buff that includes Wasp's 1 Power
- **USAgent** β High Evolutionary debuff shell companion (Post #50!)
- **Squirrel Girl** β Another free slot-filler that complements Wasp in Zoo
**Best Synergy Cards β Nadia Van Dyne Wasp:**
- **Wave** β Combines with Nadia's discount for aggressive cost reduction
- **She-Hulk** β Benefits from saved energy; Nadia's discounts help more cards fit into tight turns (Post #67!)
- **Psylocke** β Energy ramp that stacks with Nadia's cost reduction
- **High-Cost finishers** β Any deck running multiple 5 and 6-Cost cards benefits from Nadia's discount

The Verdict
Janet Van Dyne gave the Avengers their name. She led them through some of their greatest challenges. She disappeared into the Quantum Realm to save millions of lives and survived alone in a subatomic dimension for decades. She is, by any reasonable measure, one of the most important characters in Avengers history.
Marvel Snap disrespects this heroine, too, by undermining her power. That quote β from a piece criticizing her card's minimal stats β is both accurate and missing something important. Yes, a 0-Cost, 1-Power, no-ability card doesn't look like much on paper. But the Wasp's value has never been found on paper. It's found in what she enables around her: Ant-Man's full location condition, High Evolutionary's Evolved disruption, the Zoo deck's free slot filling, the energy efficiency that lets everything else run smoothly.
She costs nothing. She enables everything. She named the Avengers.
That's the Wasp. That has always been the Wasp. π
