The X-Man Who Never Wanted to Fight

We've covered the X-Men extensively across this blog. **Wolverine** (Post #2) — defined by his berserker rage. **Magneto** (Post #6) — defined by his righteous fury. **Storm** (Post #17) — defined by her goddess-level power. **Professor X** (Post #18) — defined by his dream and his burden.

Today we cover the X-Man who is defined by something different from all of them. Not rage. Not fury. Not power. Not ideology.

Who Is Colossus?

The peaceful, quiet, and selfless Piotr Rasputin learned at a young age that he was a mutant capable of transforming his flesh into steel. Being one of the physically strongest mutants, he joined the X-Men, but he only reluctantly agrees to use his powers in combat, feeling it is his responsibility for the betterment of human and mutant society.

Piotr Rasputin grew up on a farm in Siberia — the son of a hardworking Russian family, raised in simplicity and surrounded by the kind of honest, physical labor that shaped his character long before his mutation ever manifested. He was an artist before he was a warrior: painting landscapes, drawing his sister Illyana, finding beauty in the world around him. The mutation — the ability to transform his entire body into organic osmium steel, rendering him virtually indestructible and giving him strength that rivals the Hulk — came later. And it never changed who he fundamentally was.

He first appeared in **Giant-Size X-Men #1 in 1975** — the landmark issue that also introduced Storm and Wolverine and relaunched the X-Men franchise. Of that new class, Colossus was arguably the most instantly human: a farm boy from Russia who didn't want trouble, who had come to the X-Men out of a sense of responsibility rather than passion for fighting, and who carried himself with a quiet dignity that contrasted beautifully with Wolverine's aggression and Storm's grandeur.

The Contradiction at His Core

What makes Colossus so fascinating is the gap between what he is and who he is. In his armored form, he is essentially indestructible — organic steel that can withstand almost any physical assault, energy blasts, extreme temperatures, and the kind of punishment that would destroy most heroes. He has arm-wrestled the Hulk to a standstill. He has survived attacks from cosmic-level threats. He is, in terms of physical durability, one of the most formidable beings in the Marvel universe.

And he hates using it.

Not because he's afraid of his power. Because he understands the cost of violence in a way that many of his more aggressive teammates don't. Every time Colossus enters a fight, every time he uses that steel shell to deliver or absorb damage, it is a conscious choice to participate in something he'd rather avoid. He fights because the people he loves need protection. He fights because stepping aside when innocent people are being hurt is not something his conscience allows. But he never mistakes fighting for something good in itself — and that distinction matters.

Illyana — The Sister Who Defines Him

No relationship in Colossus's story is more important than his bond with his younger sister **Illyana Rasputin** — better known as **Magik**, the Sorcerer Supreme of Limbo. Their relationship is one of the most emotionally rich sibling dynamics in the X-Men universe: a gentle, protective older brother and the younger sister whose destiny took her to the darkest possible places, who emerged from Limbo changed in ways that Piotr never fully stopped mourning.

Colossus has died for Illyana's sake. He has made terrible sacrifices trying to save her. He has crossed moral lines he'd never have crossed otherwise in attempts to protect her. The limits of what this gentle man is willing to do when someone he loves is threatened are, it turns out, quite extreme — and that's the most human thing about him.

The Phoenix Five and the Dark Turn

One of the most dramatic periods of Colossus's comics history came during **Avengers vs. X-Men** (2012) — the crossover we've referenced across multiple posts — when Piotr became one of the Phoenix Five, hosts of the Phoenix Force. We covered the Phoenix Force extensively in our **Jean Grey post** (Post #34). For Colossus, hosting that cosmic power was a dark transformation: the gentle giant, amplified beyond all reckoning, became something that frightened even his teammates.

His recovery from that period — the guilt, the self-recrimination, the long process of returning to who he actually was — is one of the more quietly moving character arcs in recent X-Men history.

On the Big Screen

**Stefan Kapičić** has provided the voice and motion-capture performance for Colossus across the Deadpool films — *Deadpool* (2016), *Deadpool 2* (2018), and *Deadpool & Wolverine* (2024) — giving the character his most fully realized live-action portrayal. Kapičić's Colossus is earnest, moral, endlessly patient with Deadpool's chaos, and genuinely funny precisely because he refuses to compromise his values no matter how absurd the situations around him become. His Colossus is the straight man of a comedy double act — and he plays it with complete, committed sincerity.

Colossus in Marvel Snap — The Unbreakable Foundation

🃏 The Card

Colossus is a MARVEL SNAP card that costs 2 energy and has 4 power. It has the effect: "Ongoing: Can't be destroyed, moved, or have its Power reduced."

Two energy. Four Power. And an Ongoing ability that makes him literally untouchable: Colossus cannot be destroyed, cannot be moved, and cannot have his Power reduced by any card effect in the game.

Think about what that means. **Carnage** (Post #46) can't destroy him. **Venom** (Post #21) can't consume him. **Killmonger** can't eliminate him even though he costs 2. **Shang-Chi** can't nuke him. **Magneto** can't rip him away. **Shadow King** can't reset his Power. **Spider-Woman** (Post #70) can't reduce his Power. **USAgent** (Post #50) can't debuff him. The entire arsenal of removal and disruption cards in Marvel Snap bounces off Colossus like bullets off organic osmium steel.

Developer Comment: Colossus could use a little help, and we wanted to match the theme of "you can't do anything to this card" better. That developer comment — from the June 2022 patch that established his current form — is one of the most perfectly on-brand design notes in the game's history. The card was redesigned specifically to be completely, thematically indestructible. Because that's Colossus.

💡 The Strategic Depth

**The Killmonger Counter** — In any meta where Killmonger is popular (and it frequently is), Colossus is the cleanest possible answer to his board-clearing ability. Killmonger destroys all 1-Cost cards on the board. Colossus, at 2-Cost, is immune. But more importantly, in a deck running 1-Cost cards you want to protect, positioning them at locations Killmonger might not reach is your primary defense — Colossus himself is simply immune regardless.

**The Destroy Deck Immunity** — In your own destroy decks, you sometimes need a card at a location that will survive Carnage and Venom's area destruction. Colossus is the answer: drop him at a location you want Carnage to clean up, and he survives while everything else is consumed. He remains as a 4-Power anchor while your destroy engine fires around him.

**The Ongoing Shell Foundation** — Colossus is a natural fit in the Ongoing archetype we've built across dozens of posts. He's a 2-Cost Ongoing card with 4 Power — solid baseline stats — who also cannot be disrupted by the removal cards that often threaten Ongoing engines. Enchantress can't copy-and-strip his ability (she removes Ongoing abilities, but his card text is part of his design, not a removable buff). He is the stable foundation the Ongoing engine can always count on.

**The Warpath Synergy** — **Warpath** gains +4 Power for each empty location. In a deck deliberately built around Colossus occupying one location alone — using his indestructibility to guarantee that location stays exactly as planned — Warpath benefits from the other locations remaining empty or less populated.

**The Captain America Connection** — Captain America (Post #56!) gives +2 Power to other Ongoing cards at his location. Colossus as a 2-Cost Ongoing card placed alongside Captain America gets +2 Power from Cap's ability — becoming a 6-Power indestructible body for 2 energy. And since Colossus can't have his Power reduced, that +2 is permanent and protected.

📊 The Interesting Quirks

Can have its power reduced while in hand. Card's texts do not apply unless they are on the board, but there are contradictions to this, such as Knull and Morbius. Can swap sides at Oscorp Tower as "Swap" and "Move" are different words and are treated as different mechanics.

That last detail is a fascinating game mechanic distinction: "swap sides" and "move" are technically different in Marvel Snap's rules, meaning the Oscorp Tower location can swap Colossus to your opponent's side despite his "can't be moved" ability. It's one of those delightful card-game corner cases that reveals the depth of the game's rule system — and it's very appropriate that Colossus, the most straightforward character in Marvel, has the most rules-lawyered exception in his card interactions.

How to Play Colossus Today

**The Destroy Deck Survivor** — Place Colossus at a location where your Carnage/Venom destroy engine will fire. Everything else gets consumed. Colossus remains, an indestructible 4-Power anchor that your opponent can't remove through any standard destroy counter.

**The Ongoing Foundation** — Drop Colossus early at a location alongside Captain America (Post #56!) or Blue Marvel for Ongoing synergy. His 4 Power becomes 6 under Captain America's buff, and nothing can reduce it. He's the stable base the Ongoing engine is built on.

**The Killmonger Protection** — When you expect Killmonger, place your important 1-Cost cards at locations away from Colossus — but don't worry about Colossus himself. He's immune regardless.

**The Patriot Shell** — Wait — Colossus has an Ongoing ability, so Patriot's "no ability" buff doesn't apply directly. But in Patriot decks that also run Spectrum (Post #63!), Colossus benefits from Spectrum's +2 to all Ongoing cards on the final turn.

**Best Synergy Cards:**
- **Captain America** — +2 Power to Ongoing cards including Colossus, protected permanently (Post #56!)
- **Blue Marvel** — +1 Power to all cards including Colossus, can't be reduced away
- **Spectrum** — Closing +2 to all Ongoing cards (Post #63!)
- **Warpath** — Benefits from Colossus holding a location predictably
- **Onslaught** — Doubles Ongoing effects at his location

The Verdict

Piotr Rasputin is one of Marvel's most beloved characters because he proves something that the superhero genre doesn't always remember to celebrate: that gentleness is not weakness. That a man who paints landscapes and misses his farm and would rather tend crops than fight is not less of a hero — he is more of one, because every fight he enters is a conscious sacrifice of something he values deeply.

He became living steel because the world needed him to. He would have preferred to stay soft.

In Marvel Snap, his card is the most complete mechanical expression of who he is: can't be destroyed, moved, or have its Power reduced. The most defensive Ongoing ability in the game. Not flashy. Not spectacular. Just absolutely, completely, immovably there — exactly the way Colossus has always been for the people who needed him.

The gentle giant. Still standing. Still unbreakable. 🔵
