The technology was developed by designer Daan Roosegaarde in collaboration with Heiman infrastructure company and won the Dutch design award, the Accenture Innovation award and the 2013 Index award. Actually the design is pretty simple. All you have to do is put strips that shine in the dark along the unlit rural roads. These strips store solar energy during the day, use this energy at night and maintain their brightness for up to 8 hours. The light generator makes the contours of the road clearer in silhouette without being dazzling. In addition, empty spaces are decorated. The project was first added to the N 329 motorway, not far from the Dutch city of Oss. Besides, the designers are still trying to spread the project around the world.
