Venice, Italy
Italy seems to be a popular destination for dangerous cities. So much so that Venice, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, is not a perfect destination despite its beauty and romantic vibe. This city is always at risk of flooding as it uses water channels as roads. Therefore, tides and winds can cause high water levels that can damage city structures. In 2019, parts of Venice experienced the highest water level in the last 50 years and subsequently flooded. Unfortunately, the work on the city's floodgates, which started in the 1980s, has still not been completed. Another problem that Venice is facing is that it is sinking just like Jakarta. It is sinking 0.2 cm per year due to constantly rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and groundwater pumping. In addition, the pollution and damage caused by the passage of large cruise ships through the city is quite high. These crossings were banned in 2021. Still, Venice will probably be remembered years later, just like Atlantis.
Yanjin, China
Yanjin is considered the narrowest metropolis in the entire world. This city was built along the river. On the other hand, the city is surrounded by mountains on both sides. It seems that this city may be the true definition of a city built in the fringes. It even looks like a sandwich covered with river on both sides. The narrowest part of the city is 39 meters and the widest part is 300 meters. The strange thing is that there aren't many bridges here. In other words, considering that it is a city built on both sides of a river, this situation is really surprising. The construction techniques of houses in this city help protect them when water levels rise during the flood season.
Still, despite all the precautions, this must be a scary place to live, right?
Could you sleep peacefully at night knowing that at any moment your house could fall off the edge of a cliff or be swept away by the flood waters?
In addition to all this, the remote location of the city greatly affected its economy. However, none of these disadvantages succeeded in deterring the locals.
New Orleans, USA
New Orleans is known for its great food and wonderful people. But another reason why this city is famous is Hurricane Katrina. This deadly hurricane destroyed part of the city in 2005 and claimed many lives. After the Mississippi River destroyed the surrounding embankments and walls, the city succumbed to floods. In fact, 50% of New Orleans is already below sea level. The Mississippi River also flows very close to the area. On the other hand, he has developed flood control systems for the city since Katrina. But that wasn't the only problem. NASA has revealed that parts of the city are sinking by about 5 santimetre a year, and with rising sea levels, it is likely that New Orleans will be 2 to 4 meters below sea level by 2100.
