A Willful Destruction of Responsibility: America's True Epidemic

It's no secret that American Education is on the decline, parents who desire to place their children in the best schools and get a quality education are discovering that the system is falling apart.  Education itself has become more political, sexualized, and agenda driven than ever before, causing many parents to consider charter, private, and home schooling options; but that is not what this article is about.

We Are About Values

American society is a melting pot, a cosmopolitan nation with semi-cosmopolitan values.  Each of us have our own political, moral, and religious beliefs; this is a good thing, it is a testament to what America has stood for since her founding. Along with these differences there is a common thread, one foundational value that weaves all the others together: freedom. You have the right and responsibility to teach your family what you believe is important. This idea is illustrated perfectly in a passage from Deuteronomy 6:5-9, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates." This is all about keeping your personal beliefs at the forefront of your life. Especially when your family is involved, your values must be taught and demonstrated on a daily basis.

We Are All About This Responsibility

We are all personally responsible for the wellbeing and value system of our family, and this is partially where our problem lies. Parents want to provide for their children; it's innate. We work, buy food, give gifts, and take vacations to give our children a better life than we had. We view this as our responsibility, to provide the best possible life for our family as possible. Not surprisingly in the more disenfranchised areas, this innate desire to provide for our family becomes the sole focus of life; I must work so my family can eat, etc. I acknowledge I'm painting with a broad brush, but this overly simplistic generalization allows me to focus more on the systemic cause than the effects.

We're giving our freedoms away. The American experiment was about freedom. Freedom to be stupid, freedom to fail, freedom to succeed. - Glenn Beck

We Freely Relinquish These Responsibilities

While parents have—for the most part—decided to focus on providing a better life for their children, they have willfully neglected teaching values. Instead, they have entrusted the United States educational system to teach a morality which claims to be devoid of political and religious bias. You see, over the decades Americans decided to feely relinquish certain freedoms over to the governmental system. Yet, the educational system is not apolitical or areligious; each and every school has a set of values they will teach to your child. For this reason alone, parent's should know what is being taught in their child's classroom. I doesn't matter the political leanings of a school, or which religious overtones are prevalent; what matters is that they are not being taught by you, the parent.

The True Epidemic Gripping America

Plain a simple, Americans are unrealistically driven by fear. We fear we won't be able to provide for our families, so we work at the expense of passing on our values. We fear we cannot properly pass on our values, so we willingly allow the educational system be our surrogate, often providing contrary values. We fear that our children will get sick (irregardless to what that scientific studies on the virus which shall not be named publish), keeping them from playing outside with friends or going to school in a physical capacity. We fear that racism is so systematized in our society that the only proper response is to protest, riot, and burn it all down in the name of progress. The worst part is, those who are the most oppressed and marginalized in the United States of America—intercity poor minority families—are the most willing to give up their values first.

For the vast majority of K-12 students, studies have repeatedly shown that in-person, small group delivered education, is by far the most successful delivery method for learning. Yet parents throughout the country (and especially in the afore-mentioned marginalized areas) are demanding for their children to be taught virtually; almost guaranteeing a complete loss of a year or more in schooling for their child.

Mothers and schools plant the seeds of nearly every good and evil which exists in this world. - Benjamin Rush

Our Only Recourse: Trust & Teach

Not in the system; but in the ideals which founded this country. We collectively need to step back and trust that our families will be provided for; trust that your value system can and should be taught to your children; trust in freedom; and trust that living in a Nation which was founded under God is the ideal place to live. We have lost trust in God. You might not believe in God—that's your right—but this country was founded on the ideals found in the Judeo-Christian Scriptures; those ideals ended slavery, gave women the right to vote, and led us to become the wealthiest country in the world.

We also need a return to families passing on their morals, politics, and religious views. It doesn't matter what your values are, what matters is passing them on and training your children in the way you believe they should be trained; stop giving your freedoms away, stop willfully disenfranchising yourself, and stop giving the governmental system more power over you.

Final Thought

The founders knew that a Republic will only last until the people willingly give it away. While that time seems to be closer than ever, I pray we look at the precipice before us, that the crisis which is 2020 becomes a peaceful wakeup call startling us all into repentance.
