Why they are called sperm whale

Do you know why sperm whales are called sperm whales? Well, you are about to find out. They are named after the white waxy substance they produce which is generated by a barrel like organ inside the animal's head.

The early whalers assumed it has some sort of reproductive function and dubbed it "Spermaceti" (Latin for whale seed). Do you know that smokeless candles can be made from spermaceti which almost drove this majestic mammal into extinction.

Another interesting fact about this creature is that it has the biggest brain on earth in terms of size. Your brain only brain only weighs about 3 pounds, but a sperm whale's brain can weigh up to 17 pounds. Isn't that amazing but still it doesn't make them the smartest, of course.

Sperm whales are the largest toothed predators. Some other whales may be bigger, but unlike those filter feeders, sperm whale use stout pointy teeth during meal time.
