As you probably know, one day the mining of BTC will end and the miners will only verify transaction for fees. It is expected that this will occur around 2140. Let us ask, for the sake of interest, how much Bitcoin could cost at that time and what value today's $ 100 investment could have.
In 2140 it is estimated that the last BTC coin will be mined
One of the interesting questions about Bitcoin is what happens to it when all of the BTCs are exhausted. Recall that the maximum amount of bitcoins in the code itself is limited to 21 million, which is done by regular halving, ie halving the rate of new coin creation. Assuming Bitcoin survives, the last BTC should be mined sometime in 2140.
That's 120 years. Do we have an indicator at all, anything that can help us estimate the price of Bitcoin in such a long time?
Hal Finney
One of the possible founders of Bitcoin, the recipient of the first bitcoin transaction, Hal Finney tried to calculate it already in 2009. It is interesting because at that time it was not at all certain that Bitcoin would have any value worth mentioning. It is also interesting that Hal was cryonically frozen after his serious illness in the hope of a future resurrection.
The estimation of the bitcoin pioneer who let himself go into cryonic sleep for his bitcoins goes back to $ 10 million. Hal Finney simply took estimates of the world's household wealth and divided them with 21 million coins and received a number of 10 million for Bitcoin.
According to Credit Suisse's "Global Wealth for 2019", the total global wealth of households today is approximately $ 360 trillion. In just 10 years, households have grown considerably rich according to these data. KryptoHodler recalculated this on the basis of new data and cost us over $ 17 million per coin.
That would be almost $ 198,000 for today's $ 100 investment, for which we would buy $ 0.011628 at the current price of $ 8,600. Of course, this is a very rough estimate, which could only apply if Bitcoin becomes the world's major currency.
Dollars?
These and other methods, however, have significant flies. In this case, we rely on estimates of household wealth that change over time, so we do not know how much it will be in 120 years. We could use other methods like stock-to-flow model and others, but none of them can actually give us a better estimate than Hal.
Let us now look at our question on how much the BTC will cost in 2140 from the other end.
We have two fundamental questions. First, as we have said, it is not certain that Bitcoin will still be here in 2140. And secondly, will there still be a dollar at the time? And if so, will it still have any value? Let us remember that hundreds of years ago, sometime in 1900, it was possible to buy a pair of shoes for one US dollar.
And imagine how expensive it was then handmade such leather shoes. Yet the shoes cost $ 1, which was the dollar's purchasing power. If we compare it with today's dollar, it cannot be compared at all. If shoes cost, say, $ 100 today, they could easily cost $ 10,000 in 2140. Even more likely, there will be no more dollar.
Gold
Some bitcoin “fanatics” may not like it very much, but let's face that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are too short. If we really wanted to look for a means that would retain value for 120 years, we would have to go for gold after all. Gold and silver are traditional currencies, while Bitcoin, but even the dollar, euro or crown, are historically mere alternative currencies.
Fortunately, however, we do not invest for 120 years and we do not even have to choose. The combination of traditional physical gold and silver and modern digital Bitcoin, purely on the basis of known data, seems more suitable for long-term hold than the declining US dollar or other fiat currency. In fact, this simple knowledge will serve us much better than all possible complex calculations and models.
Conclusion
BTC has risen sharply over the last 10 years. However, today we do not really know what its price will be for 120 years. After all, we don't even know if we'll be here at all. Humanity now has perhaps too powerful weapons in its hands for the mental phase of its developmental phase. In 2140, the most valuable thing could be just a sip of healthy clean water or a touch of clean air.
