KELINDAN MANIKAM

Derived from the Indonesian word, 'kelindan' which means newly twisted thread and 'manikam' which means gemstone or diamond.

The title 'Kelindan Manikam' hints at the meaning of the illustration I made. A woman emerging from a package of flowers and leaves. Women here serve as a symbol of beauty, a trait also possessed by gemstones. While the collection of flowers and leaves that seem to wrap a woman works as much as the outer skin of the cocoon that wraps the larvae before rebirth as a butterfly. This illustration depicts the birth of a beauty that becomes light in a darkness. I am inspired to make this illustration after I heard many stories of complicated processes to achieve a good result that a lot of people experienced and endure.
