This beer, Westvleteren XII, is considered the best beer in the world, and it also has a curious history that probably has to do with the position it has earned.
It is a Trappist beer, the kind I talked about in the post "Trappist and Abbey Beers: learn to differentiate them." It is made by monks at the Abbey of Saint Sixtus, in the town of Vleteren, Belgium.
Despite being considered the best beer in the world, it is by no means the easiest to get, since it cannot be found either in the usual trade, or in bars. It is simply not marketed.
The monks manufacture a limited annual quantity, which their facilities allow, and the way to get it is not easy, among other things, because you have to go buy it at the Abbey itself.
About 30 times a year, as long as you have previously reserved your bottles by phone and have provided them with the license plate of the vehicle in which you are going to collect them, you must present yourself at the door of Saint Sixtus Abbey, for a short period of time and you can collect such a precious treasure.
Out of curiosity and looking for information, I have found several places where they sell it, and in one of them, the box of 24 units. at the price you can see below, so cheap, cheap. does not come out ...
Esta cerveza, Westvleteren XII, está considerada como la mejor cerveza del mundo, y además, tiene una curiosa historia que probablemente tenga que ver con el puesto que se ha ganado.
Se trata de una cerveza trapense, del tipo de las que hablé en el post «Cervezas Trapenses y de Abadía: aprende a diferenciarlas». Está elaborada por monjes en la Abadía de Saint Sixtus, en la población de Vleteren, Bélgica.
A pesar de considerarse como la mejor cerveza del mundo, no es ni mucho menos, la más fácil de conseguir, ya que no se puede encontrar ni en el comercio habitual, ni en bares. Simplemente, no se comercializa.
Los monjes fabrican una limitada cantidad anual, la que les permiten sus instalaciones, y la forma de conseguirla no es fácil, entre otras cosas, por que hay que ir a comprarla a la propia Abadía.
Cerca de 30 veces al año, siempre que previamente hayas reservado tus botellas vía telefónica y les hayas proporcionado la matrícula del vehículo en el que irás a recogerlas, deberás presentarte en la misma puerta de la Abadía Saint Sixtus, durante un breve periodo de tiempo y podrás recoger tan preciado tesoro.
Por curiosidad y buscando información, he encontrado varios sitios donde la venden, y en uno de ellos, la caja de 24 ud. al precio que podéis ver abajo, así que barato, barato. no sale...
The limitation is 50 bottles, and you won't be able to buy more for 60 days. And the basic pack, if I'm not mistaken is a box with 6 bottles and two glasses, which costs just over € 50.
Right in front of the Abbey, they have their own bar called "De Vrede", a must if you like beer and are in the area, where you can try the famous 10.2º Westvleteren XII (or the other two versions of they have, Westvleteren VIII of 5.8ª and Westvleteren X of 8º).
Anyway, I hope to try it one day ...
La limitación es de 50 botellas, y no podrás comprar más hasta pasados 60 días. Y el pack básico, si no me equivoco es una caja con 6 botellas y dos copas, que sale por algo mas de 50€.
En fin, espero probarla algún día...
Justo enfrente de la Abadía, disponen de un bar propio llamado «De Vrede», lugar de paso obligado si te gusta la cerveza y estás por la zona, donde puedes probar la famosa Westvleteren XII de 10,2º (o las otras dos versiones de que disponen, Westvleteren VIII de 5,8ª y la Westvleteren X de 8º).
